I saw it last night in HFR 3D. Tickets were $16.75 per adult. The film quality reminded me of something in the late 60s/early 70s in 625-line PAL format, but better of course. I had never seen a HFR film before. Soundtrack was wonderful.
The story was pretty universal; a mixture of themes found in Star Wars, John Carter, Thor, and Game of Thrones. There were some scenes that did make me jump. The barrel scene could have been cutdown a bit. I thought the movie had a conservative theme with the Government of Lake-town mirroring that of the Obama Administration.
I did not recognize Evangeline Lilly, although she is pretty, but I think elf ears make pretty women look hotter. The scenery was beautiful.
I think the movie was worth the admission. Good theatre experience.
HFR = High Frame Rate (48 frames per second instead of 24). 3D imaging has been a hobby of mine for 40+ years. I watched the Hobbit in 3D HFR at an IMAX theater and was blown away by how technically advanced it is. Not only that, but how artistically the scenes were done in 3D. The technical ultra-realism of 3D did not spoil cinematic effect, in my opinion.
I never read Tolkien growing up. After watching the LOTR films, I was inspired to read the Hobbit. The book was obviously written for children, and was tedious to read. I think the film is a great improvement, regardless what the purists think. This film becomes a welcome prequel for LOTR. The story could not have been told in one film, but two films should have been plenty.
One last thing: Smaug is a terrific and everything I’d expect for a dragon!
There is a lot of material in the book for one movie. I loved the hobbit and this one. Not perfect but pretty darn well done. All in all jackson is doing justice to the books.
My son pointed out some of the deviations are from the Silmilliarian. I haven’t read that in a long time.
Thanks for your reply. I still haven’t seen any of the new movies in 3D, but years ago I went to a revival showing of “Kiss Me Kate” which was originally shot in 3D. There wasn’t much to it, I’m sure thing are much more souped up now.
Thanks Perdog. Seeing it this week. For early bird first showings our tickets will be 8.50.
That 8.50 is for 3D
Haven’t you read the book? Are there still people on Earth to whom this story is unknown?
Excellent movie. Can’t believe they’ve managed to stretch it out into a trilogy, though.
I stopped watching any of these after the first LOTR movie(which I found to be fairly good) because I do not like the politics of Peter Jackson. What he did with the visually spectacular but loaded with leftist baggage, King Kong, was reprehensible. the original KK, as dated as it is, still is the best. the 70s Jessica Lang vehicle was laughable and like I already said...the Jackson version was gorgeous, Andy Serkis is a genius. but Jack Black was horribly miscast along with Adrien Brody. and the characters were either wimps, faggots(perhaps pedophile faggots), self absorbed melancholy ridden types or dyed skin zombies. Heroism was cleansed from the original Willis O’Brien Merian C. Cooper vehicle, by Jackson in this remake except when Jackson made into a caricature to be mocked, along with Jackson’s perceived view of racism that he seemed to be apologizing for(apologizing for the 1933 movie).
so I will not give Jackson any more money than he already has pilfered from me......especially when JRR Tolkien who was a highly religious Christian would be horrified to find a Leftist tampering with his masterwork.
Thanks! :o):o):o)
I didn’t like that they turne “The Hobbit” into an epic adventure like “Lord of the Rings”
LOTR was huge, The Hobbit was smaller and light-hearted. The moives don’t capture that and add so much that was not in the books
What, was the book not good enough for them? they had to add to it?
I kept looking at the screen and going ‘what is this? this wasn’t in the book”
But... if you are not a purist that way it is an awesome movie. I did like it very much
I was hopping for the fun of the original book. The funny and childish way Bilbo taunts the spiders (calling them “addercop” which is the worst insult you can make to a spider) was gone- replace with horror-story theatrics.
Getting lost in the forest is completely redone- and escaping from the elves smuggled in wine barrels is replaced by a fight scene.
Etc. Etc.
If you like this kind of thing (and I do - especially in 3D!!!) and are not familiar with the books (or don’t care that they took too much literary license on the details) then you will like it.
BONUS: NO detectable liberal bias!
It can't possibly be as good as the 1977 Rankin-Bass animated version that first introduced me to Tolkien.
If you had read the rest of the post you would have read about the old guy who was looking worshipfully at me. And, instead of ignoring him, I did look back and realize that although younger men didn't look at me anymore, the oldsters still thought I was a sweet young thing.
It WOULD be nice if you bothered to read everything I wrote instead of JUST the parts you didn't care for. That would be FAIR, in fact, to be judged on ALL that I wrote, wouldn't it?
As a kid, I loved the 1977 version.
I did read it all. I responded to the portions with which I disagree. I did not respond to the entire post because the first and second parts were self-contradictory.
I highly recommend 3d. I was going to see the 2d but they couldn’t get it to work, so I got to see it 3d for free. It was on one of those mega screens too. I love the Hobbit better than Lord of the Rings. It doesn’t have that little twerp Frodo in it.
Is it HFR?
The movie starts picking up when the spiders show up. I wish I watched Hobbit again before I saw this part 2. I did not want 3d because usually 3d to me is really weird on my eyes and not up to snuff, but so glad they had technical difficulties and I got to see 3d. Maybe they improved 3d in the last 2 years from what it used to be? The way they chose to end the movie, the cutoff point, was a very odd choice. I really like this actor for Bilbo. Freeman is his name? he does a great job. all these new actors I liked quite a bit.
what books are you referencing?
