"For those stuck for a gift idea in 1960s America, the solution seems simple: get a gun.

Or at least that's according to the weapon manufacturers, who tried to cash on on festive spending with these outdated adverts.

Taken from magazines and newspapers these retro images present rifles as the perfect gift for children, teenagers and adults.

One boasts that children 'from seven to seventeen' will enjoy finding an air rifle under the tree, while another encourages children to go out and buy a rifle with their Christmas money.

Remington, Browning and Colt all published the ads, even going as far as printing 'hint' tokens for family members to ensure they pick the right model:

I got a J.C. Higgins single shot .410 when I was 9. I shot it on everything from squirrels to dove until I turned 13 when my dad bought a mint condition Winchester Model 50 12ga shotgun from a friend of his and gave it to me.

The problems we have in this country aren’t caused by fathers spending too much time shooting, hunting and fishing with their children.

Mine was an Ithica model 37 featherlight.

Mine, too. It was a 16 ga bought used for $50 in 1964. I was 13, working in the family store as a bagboy for 50 cents an hour. My Dad bought it for me when I saved the $50. I used it on pheasant, duck, woodcock, grouse, rabbit and squirrel.

I wish I still had that gun.

these retro images present rifles as the perfect gift for children, teenagers and adults.

That's because they ARE the perfect gift.

I still have my youth-model shotgun from when I was 11. I'm 42 now, and my little boy will get it when he's old enough.

Best gift I ever got, and I remember unwrapping it at Christmas like it was yesterday. Thanks, Dad!

Oh the horror. Guns ads!
But isn’t it strange we did not have all these school and work shootings back then?

Today, that ad would cause lawyers to go into immediate cardiac arrest, and liberals’ heads to spin until they flew off, then explode! ;)
