Or at least that's according to the weapon manufacturers, who tried to cash on on festive spending with these outdated adverts.
Taken from magazines and newspapers these retro images present rifles as the perfect gift for children, teenagers and adults.
One boasts that children 'from seven to seventeen' will enjoy finding an air rifle under the tree, while another encourages children to go out and buy a rifle with their Christmas money.
Remington, Browning and Colt all published the ads, even going as far as printing 'hint' tokens for family members to ensure they pick the right model:

I got a J.C. Higgins single shot .410 when I was 9. I shot it on everything from squirrels to dove until I turned 13 when my dad bought a mint condition Winchester Model 50 12ga shotgun from a friend of his and gave it to me.

Best gift I ever got, and I remember unwrapping it at Christmas like it was yesterday. Thanks, Dad!
Oh the horror. Guns ads!
But isn’t it strange we did not have all these school and work shootings back then?
Savage .410 pump when I was 10 and a few years later Winchester ‘94 in .375 winchester.
About the only gifts I remember from Christmas.
Thanks Dad. I love you.
Today, that ad would cause lawyers to go into immediate cardiac arrest, and liberals’ heads to spin until they flew off, then explode! ;)
