Residents brace for winter storm expected to wallop Northeast (Live Thread, weather reports

Northeast residents are bracing for a cold welcome to 2014 due to a winter storm predicted to bring snow and frigid temperatures across much of the region.

Though snow began falling overnight in parts of New England and New York, forecasters say the full storm would not hit until later Thursday.

As much as a foot of snow or more was forecast for some areas overnight Thursday into Friday, and temperatures were expected to plummet, with some areas seeing highs just above zero, the National Weather Service said.

"There will be travel problems," said Hugh Johnson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Albany, N.Y. "It will be very cold."

FOX NEWS WEATHER CENTER

Sections of interior southern New England and New York could get up to a foot of snow, with forecasts generally calling for 6 to 12 inches. New York City, likely to see 3 to 7 inches, issued a snow alert. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged the city's commuters to leave their cars at home in case major highways are closed for Thursday's evening rush hour. "The saying it's too cold to snow, won't apply Thursday night and early Friday. Temperatures for much of this storm will be in the single numbers and this will create a snow that is as light as you will ever see in this part of the world. You should be able to actually use a push broom to move the snow if you would like."

- David Epstein, a meteorologist in Maine

Here in North-West Pa....17 degrees...real feel 7 degrees. Three inches of snow on my deck....and still coming down...wind chill warning with snow accumulation 3-6 inches.

Not a big deal here...it’s after all..winter.

You are an honest man.

My hometown in North Dakota was 20 below a few days ago and is supposed to drop that low again by Sunday.

When the wind or even a breeze blows at that temperature it seems to cut you in half.

I think of the boys out in the oil patch, many of them from the South, working night and day, cold, wind, snow, water and oil and slop all over them from the well....they’re damn near like an army and they are serving the country almost as much.

Hubby is just mad that our snow blower got killed by Sandy and he never replaced it. But except for that one bad Christmas snow storm we never needed it, really. (In fairness, who I am to judge, I won’t be the one shoveling.)

“It’s a snowstorm. No big deal.” Yea we got about 8 inches here in the Mohawk Valley. But it is still above zero ( 7 F) so I’ll be going outside in about 10 minutes to smoke my cigar drink a Sam Adams and watch TV, probably even watch part of the OK/Ala game outside.

One of my colleagues at school has a father who has a ranch in Montana. He called yesterday to tell her that the temp have been really cold and the snow is building up.

He goes out on horseback every morning to check on the calves.

She is scared to death for him and told him to take the truck out instead.

He told her horses don't break down like trucks do/

I bought my 60 year old brother and my parish priest who is also 6,0 snow blowers for Christmas 3 years ago.

That put the maloiki on snow in our region for three years.

There were still people without power up in Maine and maybe New Hampshire from the last big storm just a few days ago? A week? I hope that they were able to get things in order in the few days that they had, because there’s always a chance that they could lose power again. It’s just miserable to lose power.

Okay, I have held back, but since you brought it up, I am a “Montanan” and I truly find this whole thread hilarious.

The first Mrs. Lurkin used to call him Burnt Hamburger.

He was doing ok on the Rose Bowl until the third quarter when he started channeling Vin Skully and launched into inanity and irrelevancies.

this is inspiring ... consoling to read the comments of Freepers being brave in the face of danger ...

I was drinking some joe at Mickey Dees ‘til the staff told me, “young man, git home before you get stuck in a ditch and hafta bandon yer Impala, nevah to be seen again.” Do I dare venture out in the morning? Or wait for the Saturday thaw?

Used to be called (pick season) weather, now it’s called superstorm, super blizzard, etc. And then you get some 20 yr old witless twit saying something like: “This is the worst storm in memory (from a 20 yr old).

There are still people in Lansing Michigan without power after almost 2 weeks.

The city board of water and light says that those few hundred remaining people have issues that are their own responsibility to deal with before power can be restored. I saw a guy on the news tonight saying that his whole block is still without power. He said he replaced his utility pole the day after the storm and he’s still without power.

-4 temps forecasted tonight.

“Winnipeg has a wind chill of -54 F.”

That’s life threatening. Your skin and lungs would have seconds before real difficulty.

I live in central Maine. It was about -6 this morning.

Talked to a friend up north. It was -29 on his back deck this morning at sunrise (Real temp. Not wind chill)

We’re expecting about a foot of very dry snow tonight, which will cause blowing blizzard conditions.

No word on school closings yet.
