Full title: 'They had no idea if my insurance was active or not!': Obamacare confusion reigns as frustrated patients walk out of hospitals without treatment
Hospital staff in Northern Virginia are turning away sick people on a frigid Thursday morning because they can't determine whether their Obamacare insurance plans are in effect.
Patients in a close-in DC suburb who think they've signed up for new insurance plans are struggling to show their December enrollments are in force, and health care administrators aren't taking their word for it.
In place of quick service and painless billing, these Virginians are now facing the threat of sticker-shock that comes with bills they can't afford.
'They had no idea if my insurance was active or not!' a coughing Maria Galvez told MailOnline outside the Inova Healthplex facility in the town of Springfield.
She was leaving the building without getting a needed chest x-ray.
'The people in there told me that since I didn't have an insurance card, I would be billed for the whole cost of the x-ray,' Galvez said, her young daughter in tow. 'It's not fair – you know, I signed up last week like I was supposed to.'
The x-ray's cost, she was told, would likely be more than $500.

If you cannot show an insurance card with a policy number, effective date, basic coded payment types, and your name, YOU DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE!
If you get it later, you will have to take the bill you got and process it through the insurance company - if you really ever get a policy.
The UK media has been using Obamacare’s rollout to show what the alternative is to what’s here now with the NHS, had multiple coworkers ask if healthcare in the US is really like they’ve seen recently in the news. I
Besides at least ten times as many people having had their insurance policies summarily cancelled as have (allegedly) been registered/enrolled in ObamaCare (though they haven't necessarily paid yet), now we also have the problem of simply not knowing who has coverage and who doesn't.
I suspect that a lot of these people are completely disoriented, and just show up at the hospitals blithely assuming that, since they've heard about ObamaCare in the media, and because they have the requisite concentration of melanin in their skin, then that must mean that they automatically have coverage.
Can't these people simply produce the laminated ObamaCare photo ID that they were snail-mailed after enrolling? /snicker
The classic fallacy of believing that, e.g., if you've successfully fixed the shot brakes in 99% of your fleet of trucks, the problem is 99% solved - even if you are incapable of determining which of those trucks have been fixed, and which are still death-traps.

I did NOT see that the hospital was turning people away. I DID see that the people were turning away because they did not want to pay for their treatment.
Further down (lots further down)in the story it says that Maria Galvez would have had to pay the $500 for her X-rays with or without ObieCare, due to her $5,500 deductible.

The problem is, these people simply don’t understand the concept of a “deductible”. they figure if they have insurance, everything is at no cost to them.
Sticker shock when they find out THEY have to put government mandated skin in the game.
The Treasury department is cranking out worthless dollar bills as fast as they possibly can. One would think they could fake a few ObamaCare cards until the real ones show up two years later. (snicker)
The high deductibles are by design. Obamacare is suppose to fail (you likely know this) so single payer can take over.
I think the problem is it’s failing so badly the american sheeple are waking up and will flat out reject single payer.
Much like they rejected Obamacare. However, I think real tar, feathers and pitch forks will come out to keep single payer a commie pipe dream.

I agree with you it was designed to fail but more slowly. The bottom completely came out from under it from day one and it crashed in Hindenburg style rather than a slow decay.
I can only hope, when (not if), single payer is the suggested solution, the American people rise up (Go Falcons!) as never before.

None of those isolated oligarchs ever defined what that means: how many die, how many go without medical CARE, how many are bankrupt, how many credit card defaults, how many months of recession?

An insurance company won't pay anywhere near $3,000 yet this person will be billed $3,000 if they're uninsured. That's a real problem. Corrupted medical billing.

Ms. Galvez is being mugged by reality. Odds are she has no understanding whatsoever of what a deductible is, and is part of the class of people who thought Bammy was going to pay her rent and put gas in her car.
I expect the internet to be flooded with ‘I got free medical care thanks to Obamacare’ stories this week. Some will be lies/planted stories. Some will be people too ignorant to know that the bill will be coming.
