Parents call police for help, cops show up and kill their 18-year-old son

Two North Carolina parents are in shock after local police shot and killed their 18-year-old son in their own home, while they watched helplessly.

The family called police because they were worried about their son, Keith Vidal, who is schizophrenic and suffers from depression, according to local news. Vidal, armed with a small screwdriver, was apparently having a psychotic episode. Mark Wilsey, Vidal’s father, called the authorities to help deal with the situation.

An officer from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and another from the Boiling Spring Lakes police department showed up to the house soon after. Eventually, a third officer from the Southport police department entered the home as well, and ordered the use of tasers to subdue Vidal. According to Wilsey, Vidal was pinned on the ground by two of the officers when a third said, “we don’t have time for this,” and shot Vidal, killing him.

Vidal had just turned 18, and weighed a mere 90 pounds. He couldn’t have hurt anyone with the screwdriver, and had no history of violence according to family and friends.

“There was no reason to shoot this kid,” said Wilsey in a statement. “They killed my son in cold blood. We called for help and they killed my son.”

After her son was killed, Vidal’s mother suffered a mental breakdown and was treated by medical staff.

The New Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office told The Daily Caller that no statement has been released yet, but the district attorney and state investigators are looking into the shooting.

A similar thing happened to a Georgia family in October. (RELATED: Family calls 911 for medical help, cops show up and kill son)

It’s not just there friend, it’s here in Canada too, across Europe you name it, it’s almost like there is a global force at work to enslave us all.

wow, they expect us to believe that he not only had a pistol in the back of the car, but that he was able to pull it out and point it at his head and shoot it as well? This isn’t even remotely passing the sniff test.

The point they’re all making is that generally speaking these stories happen way too much. They’re saying the attitudes have changed a lot over the years, I’ve seen it too. I have several ex army buddies who went police after and they tell me the same. They’re now only staying to get their pensions, which I don’t agree with, but I don’t tell them what to do.

There still are good police out there, nobody is saying there aren’t, but they are just few and far between.

Are the police planning to battle a panzer tank division? For the life of me, I never heard of a situation that would require this.

Should all start using Robertson, they’re so much better:) Of course it’s Canadian invention so they’re only common here I believe.

Robertson screwdriver could really be a weapon of mass destruction.

To be fair, there are probably not a million good officers out there, that number sounds far far too high. Perhaps in a department of 30, you might get 2 good ones, I’m just playing the odds here.

For every 30 bad stories I hear, I’ve heard about 2 good ones, that’s the math I have seen.

wow babygene, your wife threw a bottle at you? What the heck did you do to tick her off so much? It is extremely lucky though that you weren’t armed heh.

I agree though, I fail to see how three officers couldn’t restrain a kid with a screwdriver. I also say that firemen are cut from a different cloth. It’s a whole different mentality.

From what .223 said they’d probably agree. My police friends here tell me the same thing. Like I said earlier, us vs them mentality. To be fair it’s not often their fault, they’re being trained this way now.

“across Europe you name it”
____________________________________________
Western Europe, probably so, but my years were spent in formerly Communist central Europe. I never once felt a “police state” atmosphere.
Here in the Philippines, life is even more relaxed. Other then working on my permanent residency visa, there is no interaction with legal authorities, and no local police harassment. Just before I left America for the last time in 2004, the police were jack-booted thugs, even in small rural towns. They were itching for any reason to pull you over and harass you. Here, there are very few police, but when a car full passes me, they all wave and smile.
I might, however, add...In America, a car is almost always necessary. In my international travels, there have been very few times when I needed or wanted a car.

If I had to judge by our local PD for every common sense veteran there are three or four cops that need supervision and one that needs to get into another line of work.

Without more details about the family, actual information about where the guy was shot, and what the police officers have to say in their defense, I would hesitate in condemning our men.

yet with 3 cops - somehow a 90# kid got shot...in his own home - go figger

To be fair, good stories don’t make the news. But if there’s a bad one on the force, “good” cops cover up for him.

I had a cop as a hunting buddy and he was a decent guy, I knew other guys on his force that were OK too. But they had one cop they nicknamed “Psycho”, and they all said out of their own mouths they expected him to go postal one day. But to a man, they all helped cover up his regular eccentricities/infractions. The guy used to go to a truck stop to take his breaks, draw his service weapon and put a bead on cars & trucks passing on the highway, and laugh when people were shocked. I knew a guy he gave a citation to for parking his car in his own driveway in front of his home, for “impeding the flow of traffic”, because he wanted to park his cruiser there, as it was a shorter distance to knock on the door. Once he locked himself out of his own cruiser on the side of a highway, he didn’t call in, and all units went in an all out search. When they found him and his car, he was wandering off the road in the desert “looking for poachers”. His gf ran away with her kid, and he quit the force to go across the country hunting her down...when the landlord entered his abandoned house, punch holes in the walls, bullet holes in the ceiling, windows nailed shut and hasps on the bedroom doors like he was locking them in. They found out later he had a psych discharge from the Marines and somehow that just slipped through the system...

We learned the hard way that you don’t call the police on your young son to “scare him”. Back in the day, the cops would come and let him know how serious his “offenses” were and the kind of life they could lead to while giving you a wink. Now, they haul the kid off to jail and press charges, to be followed by court.

yeah don’t call the cops unless you want someone killed or arrested

Exactly. Though they are also efficient dog exterminators.

A friend of mine was a cop and his dad has been the sheriff of a certain county for a very long time. His assessment of cops is along these very broad generalizaations:

25% Donut eaters. They would prefer to not have the hassle of even writing you a ticket. When a cop sees you break a traffic law, yet ignores it, you’ve probably run across one of these.

25% Brown shirts. These are the power trip thugs that enter the force because they like the power over other people and the respect it brings. They are the most dangerous. Police forces try to filter out this sort of person, which is why it is only 25%.

25% Former high school jocks. These are the guys that are physically superior to most guys and, since their life revolved around sports, they never acquired any marketable skills so they fall back on what they know - prepared to get physical, if necessary, and probably win. This group often digresses to the group above.

25%: Good guys. Honest to God good guys that sincerely want to make a difference in their community. They join the force with the belief that the cops are the good guys and they are out to keep the peace and make the community a better place.

The sad part is that a lot of the last group eventually either digress into the first or second group or get out of that career path, as my friend did.

But whenever you get pulled over by a cop, it really helps to know you are probably dealing with one of the guys described above, and it behooves you to respond accordingly.
