So I'm thinking of travelling
Digdem

Posted on 01/26/2014 9:54:24 AM PST by digdem

Sorry for the vanity. I want to take my truck, my pop-up camper and hit the road. My one bedroom apartment feels like a prison cell and I'm tired of psying too much money for cable re-runs. I have my trusty laptop but I'll want internet. Any ideas on how to connect to the world while I'm enjoying some great bass fishing?

All suggestions are highly appreciated.

TIA.

I need my internets when we're out in the RV!

This has worked perfect for me (cheap too):

Check out Virgin Mobile MC760 Wireless Broadband No Contract on Ebay. They're around $25.

Never been in a campground where I could not connect. A $20 Top Up card at Walmart gets you 1G, which is active for a month. It's fast enough that I can listen to live radio.

Get some kind of smartphone. Research the models first, to find out which one you want. If you don’t have much money, try EBay.

I used one of those little mobile Verizon units belonging to a customer

I use my Samsung Note 2. Native support for tethering and mobile hot spot. Fast.

Don’t do anything Google. Use another search provider.

OK. We used to camp in a pop-up camper. A few days of messy cooking and even more inconvenient clean-up, along with a few cold nights pressed up against the cloth sides of the camper, waking up cold and wet, having to go potty & freezing into a popsicle ought to cure any romanticized ideas of “camping out”. Been there, done that, got the tee-shirt; don’t get me wrong, we were young at the time and persevered. Now in my 60’s and somewhat stiff, you’re welcome to my share that’s still left over from those days. - My advice is SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY - and it’ll still be a hard sort of life.

What ToastedHead said. It looks like a much better solution for a laptop rather than a cellphone.

I looked at EBay and also found external antenna/cable sets for more reach and better signals for the same kind of service.

“Buck Pole” = Poor Bambi ... :<

Sorry, couldn’t resist - I know the deer problems and I do support hunting!

Leave the laptop at home. The world will still be there when you return from your trip.
Remember to thank me for making your trip even better.

I was just reading a review of the Virgin prepaid WiFi and they said the minimum plan is now $35 (for 2 GB). Do you know if this is correct?

Actually now I’m looking at the Virgin site and they show $25 for 1.5 GB. Is $20 for 2 GB maybe a Wal-mart only plan?

Do they still restrict shooting does on MI?

You have to get a doe permit but its not exactly a restriction since everyone who asks can get one.

Kind of a throwback to when deer were rarer but now its just about grabbing a few extra dollars in revenue.

Here's what my options look like after I've connected to the remote satellite (what they call it) and logged into the virgin website:

This is the scratch off card I buy at Walmart so I don't have to use my cc info online:

Here's the way they show your connectivity on the screen:

A lot of campgrounds offer free wifi now, but the speeds on this gizmo are always better, and I feel safer staying off the open network.

“Leave the laptop at home.”

It helps when we’re going somewhere we’ve never been before. Usually I’m too busy before we leave to scope out the best trails for the kiddies, or what local festivals are going on.

Plus there’s always the chance that the nice campground in the pictures is nasty once we get there, requiring a move the next day. Gotta research to see if the RV will fit, or if 50amp is available to keep the cat air conditioned while we’re out during the day.

Thanks for the info!

So it looks like the $20 is a Walmart exclusive but is still available and is for 1 GB of data for 30 days. I’m looking for something for my mom so she can have internet at home (or wherever) but doesn’t have to get hooked into a contract. She doesn’t watch much video, mostly just does email, so I think 1 GB would work for her.

How easy is it to connect to the “remote satellite”? Was the initial setup pretty straightforward?

I also see that Verizon/Walmart have a Straight Talk plan for wifi hot spot that’s $15 for 1 GB/30 days. That’s even a little bit cheaper but I wonder if their customer service and that sort of thing is as good as Virgin.

My pleasure!

I am no tech guru, so I'm sure she can handle it. I think it only involved downloading the software, following the little brochure that comes with the hardware. I'm sure I used my usual fake "internet persona" information to set up the account. I've never had a contract phone plan, so they must not have needed anything like that for set up.

All you have to do is stick this little guy into the USB:

In about ten seconds the connectivity box from above pops up on the screen, and you hit 'Connect'. If you're already paid up and active, it fires right up. Otherwise, they take you to the V Mobile homepage where you can log in and add your scratch off number.

Last year I lived in an apartment for work away from the family for a while, and didn't want to pay another internet bill, so I used it the whole time. It was even good enough that I could log into my Directv account and watch TV once or twice...although I'm sure I would have burned through the 1G if I did it too often.
