1. Why ever start a facebook account.

2. You NEVER "quit" facebook. You're there forever. You can disable/suspend your account but if you ever log back in for whatever reason. It's back on.

Never had one, never will.

I’ll read it later when the full list is posted (probably on Facebook) rather than multiple short teaser posts on various sites all pimping the same source.

Liberals, those who haven’t yet unfriended me, have learned mostly not to post political stuff where I can see. I don’t suffer the fools lightly, and have had great fund pricking their very thin skins.

Not true. In November, 2012, I went to Facebook to close my account. I was given two choices - simply close the account and return at a later time, or close the account permanently, but the account would be wiped out in two weeks and I would never be able to log on again. I chose the latter. I’ve had my nieces check several times since then, and it says there is no record of an account under that name and e-mail. I have tried myself and it won’t let me log on.

I am quite happy with that, and don’t miss it at all.

Our far flung extended family have an exclusive family page that is non public where we can share family news and photos. Sure we could start a website that does the same thing but then somebody would have to design and maintain it.

Hubby and son maintain a FB page devoted to their mutual hobby (stock car racing) that they use to communicate with other hobby racers and their fan base.

I maintain a business FB page that actually does bring in business and I haven even used any of the paid promotion apps.

All free.

You don’t have to accept friend requests and you can unfriend anyone who becomes a pita. The writer of this little screed sounds like a whiny 8th grader who just got unfriended by most of his clique. I am unimpressed.

I don’t discuss politics on FB. It’s a tool for staying in touch with friends and family across a distance, to share interesting articles, and look at pictures if each other’s pets and children. It’s also a very valuable marketing took for those of us who have a small business—great free advertising. I have no expectation of privacy on FB. I’m presenting a carefully-crafted public image for potential clients, and though it is not untrue, it has no resemblance to the argumentative conservative OTTB Mare you all know and love here on FR! ;-) On FB I’m pleasant and agreeable.

As with any other tool that a computer offers one, Facebook has its appropriate uses.

I keep in touch with good friends on Facebook and they are the only ones who can see my account. As to too much ‘info about me’ being out there... it is already out there whether you use Facebook or not

So, if you do quit Facebook, do you have to update your status with an Opus?

They can be useful though. Some post interesting song videos...friends and relatives can show themselves and where they travel (but be careful about “I’m having a great time in Florida!”—open invite for burglars).
I help promote blues, folk, rock shows in Boston area on college radio etc and we promote festivals, shows, open mic nights etc. Show a video of a New Orleans-style performer
on New Year’s Eve. Plug someone’s new album, etc.

But the politics can suck!

I don’t have a face I would want in a book, and nary a twit to twitter, so I’ve avoided both, and feel none the worse for it.

The article addresses none of the legitimate reasons for quitting facebook, only the stupid childish ones.

Facebook seems to be the biggest short in the history of the stock market.

Its only a question of time as to when this fad passes.

True story. A friend’s wife has a FaceBook account. She probably shouldn’t have access to a computer. Anyway, she opens her e-mail one evening when I happened to be there. One of those banner ads for something or other shows up at the top of her e-mail home page. It read: “Three People Have Un-Friended you”.

She believed it and got all huffy. I wanted to laugh, but I just had to leave her believing that what she had just read was the truth...

His first complaint is basically that he’s friends with a bunch of annoying argumentative people which won’t really change if he quits FB. And the rest is mostly him not using the settings correctly.
