Being gay IS in your genes, say scientists in controversial new DNA study

Being gay could be in the DNA.

Scientists have found two stretches of DNA linked to homosexuality in men.

The confirmation of the existence of a ‘gay gene’ or genes will strengthen arguments that homosexuality is a matter of biology, rather than choice.

However, it also raises the prospect of a genetic test that could be used by insurance companies to discriminate against clients or by pregnant women to abort gay babies.

In the study, Chicago University researchers analysed the DNA of more than 400 pairs of gay brothers, recruited at Gay Pride festivals at marches over several years.

This revealed flagged up two pieces of DNA that seem to be linked to homosexuality.

It is not known which of the many genes they contain are key or how they affect the development of sexual orientation.

However, the result, revealed at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s prestigious annual conference, backs up a contentious 1993 study.

That research, the first to find evidence of a ‘gay gene’, created a storm of controversy, which was further fuelled when other scientists failed to find a genetic link.

Dr Michael Bailey from Northwestern University in Illinois, who contributed to the latest study, said it is the biggest of its kind.

He added: ‘Sexual orientation has nothing to do with choice. Our findings suggest there may be genes at play – we found evidence for two sets that affect whether a man is gay or straight.

‘Although this could one day lead to a pre-natal test for male sexual orientation, it would not be very accurate, as there are other factors that can influence the outcome.’

Despite this, he would not would not object to a prenatal test being developed.

Are these the same politicists that claim Glowbull Warming is real?

Sorry, I don’t believe liars, liars have no credibility, and there is no longer any such thing as science.

They have to be attracted or at least not repulsed. Why do you think they make the blowup dolls in different shapes? A regular guy is not going to go after the blowup sheep unless he is into farm animals. And according to gays they are only attracted to guys.

Although that does not fit with the guys who get married to a female have kids and then suddenly "have to be true to themselves" and get a boyfriend. That would make it a choice and we can't have that so we will not bring it up.

I agree that humans can choose to have sex with any number of things but the key word there is choice.

If you a guy and you can choose to have sex with a girl you are not hardwired to be "gay".

If you are not hardwired to be gay it is not genetic.

If homosexual males and females have no desire to procreate, I don't understand why they would want to adopt someone else's children. They should not be allowed to have it both ways!

I can't even imagine being reared by two "mothers" or two "fathers". Even the thought of it repulses me.

They make those toys in the shape of flashlights, even. Or something equally obscure. They let their imagination do the rest.

If they can pretend a plastic toy to be a real woman, they can just as easily (actually, more easily) pretend a woman to be a man they fancy.

There is psychiatric treatment being taught and practiced by two M.D.’s I know that is called Family Generational Therapy.

It is based on inherited behavior from past generations.

But.....Epigenetics isn’t in spell check yet

How do they know it's not the "festival" gene instead of the "gay" gene?

In other words, they were obligated to find a link, the fact that they did not was a ‘failing,’ and now at last there is a study that reaches the ‘right’ conclusion. How scientific./s

I’ll just add one thought on this, which is that even if homosexuality is proven to be genetic (possibly pending expression, as in epigenetics), that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. Children are born with harelips and heart problems and deafness and all sorts of things that may be genetic in their origin, but they’re not beneficial to the child. Celebrating being gay just seems so odd to me, like celebrating being born with a cleft palate.

On the other hand, it has also occurred to me that in prehistoric times, having homosexual members of the tribe might be beneficial to the tribe as a whole. Say you have 30 able-bodied men in your tribe, who are capable of going out on the hunt and bringing back meat. But what if only 26 of those men have bonded with a woman and produced children? The advantage would be that you would have more men (all 30) producing for the tribe, yet fewer young mouths to feed. So those children might be better fed, and you might get a higher rate of children who grow to maturity.

Besides, you’d have to also study a straight population to see how often these genes are present, and then compare the two. The findings are incomplete.

What about all the exgays/former-homosexuals? Did their genes mutate into heterosexuality, or are they lying?

And IF this study turns out to be true (which I doubt) and homosexuality is inborn and immutable, then that would call into question what the Apostle Paul and the Bible say about the matter (”thou shalt not lie with...”, “such were some of you”, etc.)

Good point. Perhaps there is a “homicidal maniac” gene. The moral and criminal justice implications of that if true, are tremendous.

Maybe a sort of situation like the movie with Tom Cruise about the police being able to stop murders before they happen. Never saw it but its title was something like “The Majority Report”.

Science is a two-edged saw and with some of the wackos we see in the climate change/Global Warming movement and academic/research leadership, we had better be careful what we unleash.
