NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I’m not going to push it here that is for sure. I hate planting stuff and then having it die due to weather.

I ordered my seeds at the beggining of the week, and packages started arriviong Wednesday. That was fast! I was especially impressed at the one I ordered pawpaw seeds from. A few years back I got pawpaw seeds off Ebay, and paid $10 after shipping for 5 seeds. This one was 2 or 3 dollars (I’d have to check) but it was a whole bag full!

I’ll say more tomorrow. I think my sleepy meds kicked in. Funny how I don’t notice until I try to move or type.

Just flipped the calendar over to March. 13 days until my last average freeze date. 20 days until spring equinox.

From the HEB grocery ads this week, lol. Hey, is everyone planting "artisan" seeds this year? Ack, the things they try to spin. Or maybe Monsanto has hired some great PR guys.

Taking a short break from hauling wood mulch and working on a heart attack. ;)

Leave it to marketing guys to do something, anything, to differentiate their product.

There’s aso many deer here that they birth on people’s soft green front lawns and we nearly have to push them out of the way to get to the main road. There’s one bed they think is especially planted just for them.

15 days to my last average freeze. A big HA! I got happy and went with that last year knowing full well there’d be a freeze April 15 but hoped with the high summer temps.... Never again. Two freezes and two hail storms and two floods. Hope it’s not too cold and wet election day next week as I’m needing to earn some brownie points with Mother Nature by letting friends dig through my box of seeds again to get them started in gardening. One was finally converted last year so it’s slowing working.

“The Texas Hill Country is overpopulated with deer...”

I've been to Bandera twice. My friends live on a high hill outside Bandera. My son drove me there both times. The first time we went, my friend warned us about the deer crossing the roads. They have heavy duty guards on the front of their car and truck due to the deer.

We were watching the road as we went to their house and went up the hill on their private road to the house. When we left that evening, we drove maybe 15 mph as it looked as though the entire population of deer in that county was on my friends’ private road and then the road to get to the main highway. There was every size of deer out on the road - the babies, the moms and the dads - it was family night on that road.

My friends are gardeners and have three gardens. One is a raised garden totally fenced in including wire over the top. The other gardens have heavy duty fence around them. They had a landscape company come in and plan the front yard, putting in plants deer hate and plants that take little water.

They suffer from having little rain. They are on well water plus have a catchment for rain water to help water the gardens.

If you are in the hill country, you likely need every drop of rain water you get and you want more as they do.

“Water from the bottom to avoid damping off.”

I had enough of the seed starter I have been using for 15 of the Dixie cups, and opened a bag of Jiffy seed starter, and filled 6 cups with that. After two days, the seed starter I have been using, was wet, but the Jiffy starter was not soaking up the water. Yesterday, they still had no water in that Jiffy mix. I filled a spray bottle with filtered water and sprayed the top to get water down in that cup. I hope that doesn’t cause the seed to ruin.

It was my fault, I guess, for not reading the instructions on the bag. It said to moisten with water BEFORE planting the seed. I thought all seed starter would work the same way, suck up the water from the bottom. This is the pits if the water doesn’t go inside those cups. How could this mix stay dry with the cups having holes around the bottom and holes on the bottom and sitting in water?

The mix may have a lot of peat moss in it. Peat moss is very hard to get wet.

I always pre-dampen my starting media. It just works better that way for me.

This shifting tons of tree mulch is a lot like real work. I'm already exhausted, and I have much more to do.

Oh well. Back to it.

Is the rot or brown spot always on the bottom of the tomato?Or random location?
Blossom end rot is always the bottom of the fruit. The fruit will look great until you flip it over and then YUCK. Blossom end rot is a calcium deficiency. Sometimes there is enough calcium in the soil, but an imbalance of micro-nutrients or SPASTIC access to water makes the calcium inaccessible to the plant. You can spray the plant as suggested. Or, if soil in your area is void of calcium, as you plant the tomatoes, stir a handful of land plaster or agricultural gypsum into each hole. I mulch tomatoes heavily as this keeps the moisture at a somewhat constant level thus not vulnerable to blossom end rot.

More irish potato notes:
When your potato plants start blooming, they are making little potatoes. If you gently dig, you can harvest new potatoes at this time without damage to the plants (take a few from each plant to build a pot of potatoes). Once the plants expire (approximately June in warmer climates), dig. I always spread them out in a barn loft so that they were in the dark and the mud stuck to them would dry completely. As I used them for cooking, I use smaller first and save the largest for last. Large potatoes keep in the natural longer than small potatoes.
