Wow it’s ending already?!?! Now I’m depressed. Great show. Found it the other day and watched em all at once.

Colonel Mustard, in the conservatory, with the little silver Yorkie [we lost our candlestick and had to use monopoly pieces.]

Tell NO ONE.

“I’m convinced Matthew McConaughey got his best actor award mostly on the merits of his acting in True Detective.”

You are not alone. I read someplace that from now on actors are going to strive to get good TV parts on shows that will air during Oscar voting season.

They are both excellent, and I like how they don’t like each other but they do trust each other and they make that totally believable.

Both of them really are great in that show.

Now that the season is almost done, the one character that I have come to intensely dislike is the ex-wife played by Michelle Monaghan.

Ok, here’s what I think. Marty Hart told us that the “detective’s curse” is this:

“The detective’s curse – the solution is right under your nose, but you’re paying attention to the wrong clues.”

I believe that comment was directed to the audience, meaning that they have already shown us the clues to figure out the solution, but we have just been distracted and not seeing them. So, go back and look at strange things which were shown, but the detectives ignored at the time.

There are many such clues that people have found, but I think a few of the big ones point to at least one revelation coming next week for sure: Audrey (Hart’s daughter), was either abused by the cult, or witnessed the abuse, in person, or by seeing a videotape similar to the one Cohle found. If this is true, then the clues were not just under our noses as viewers, but literally under Hart’s nose in his own house.

Also, I think there are clues point to Maggie’s father being involved in the cult, and that Cohle accidentally killed his own daughter.

“It seems as though they have run out of time to pull all these loose ends together in a final 1 hour show.”

I was thinking the same thing, but check out what I wrote in post #26 about the “detective’s curse”. They have already shown us the clues to the solution in previous episodes, so that can save them a lot of time in exposition, since they can do a quick-cut series of flashbacks as Marty or Cohle finally piece everything together, showing us clips from previous episodes. We won’t even need to see the whole scenes, a glimpse of each done in a good montage will tell the story for those that were paying attention.

Yes, and season 2 will be a whole different story, with a different cast, like “American Horror Story”. If they keep the same writers and showrunners, it will probably still be good though. I can only imagine what A-list movie actors will be clamoring for a shot on this lowly tv show after they have seen how well season 1 worked out.

interesting thoughts but I think if they made it maggie’s father or one of the detectives or another main character at this point that would seem over the top.

The lawnmower guy is probably a minion of sorts, but not a ringleader, too obvious now, and he doesn’t seem that smart. Dunno. Maybe tuttle didn’t reslly die?

IMO its probably something we haven’t seen yet. or barely seen but will be developed.

BTW that audrey stuff you said makes a lot of sense. After seeing the pics she drew and the dolls she put on the floor circling the naked barbie. good observations. kudos.

could not agree more. the dolls in the circle look like the video hart nearly got sick with. the daughter is not well now in adulthood, she is on medication and her symptoms as a teenager all point to abuse, you would wonder what her paintings are about. i do think harts father in law is involved and was using the granddaughter within the group. i also think harts wife is indirectly involved trying to please ‘daddy’. also hart’s ex-wife seems to have done very well for herself in her new marriage. i wonder is that some type of payment perhaps? i think hart was setup with the girl who offered sex as a way of breaking up the detective team. thats why the pics were sms’ed to his phone. might also be why harts wife slept with cohle...to break up the team and divert, but she could have been simply manipulated into that.

truly amazing series. first class acting, story telling, cinema quality shots. almost as good as the walking dead...almost. ;) we need a similar thread on TWD...

I don’t really like her as a character, but she’s very good in that part too. (I will say that hubby doesn’t blame her for leaving, he has no sympathy for philanderers.) And their boss is good too, whoever that actor is.

Boom - I think you’re right, esp. w/ regard to Maggie. I noticed in last week’s episode that she was living in a very nice house - nicer than what she and Marty lived in while they were married. Nothing’s ever said (that I can recall) about her having a job, so the money’s coming from somewhere now that they’re divorced. It sure as heck isn’t alimony.

Remember, we already know there must be more than one killer involved. The stoolie in jail talked about a “place down south where rich men (multiple)” engaged in satanic rituals and murder. Tuttle was only one of those “rich men”. His brother, the governor, is surely another, but, if their are 5 masked men in the video and the picture at Dora Lange’s mother’s home, that still leaves 3 inner circle members for us to figure out. The only other “rich man” that I can think of that we have seen already is Maggie’s father, who seems pretty well off, and there are clues that he is tied in to whatever happened to Audrey.

I think Lawnmower man, Dewall, and Reggie Ledoux were the “3 younger guys” that the tranvestite in New Orleans talked about, and I think, like you say, they seem more like minions than masterminds.

“you would wonder what her paintings are about.”

The one painting of hers that we saw a glimpse of had a pattern of black stars that was the same as the tattoo on Dora Lange’s friend’s neck (the one that directed them to the “hillbilly bunny ranch”). So, yeah, the paintings seem to point in that direction too.

“i also think harts wife is indirectly involved trying to please ‘daddy’.”

I’m torn about her. She has done some suspicious things and shown that she can be even more cold, calculating, and dishonest than either Hart or Cohle. Still, it’s hard to wrap your mind around her being involved knowingly in killings or abuse. I do think that she’s got some secrets though. Remember how she explained away Audrey knowing about sex at a young age to Marty? “Girls always know earlier than boys. They have to.” Sounds like, at the least, she witnessed some stuff or was abused herself. She was also a “wild one” when she was younger, just like young Audrey.

“also hart’s ex-wife seems to have done very well for herself in her new marriage.”

I don’t remember any hint that she ever remarried, but maybe I missed it. I figured she was just doing well, being a doctor and all.

” i think hart was setup with the girl who offered sex as a way of breaking up the detective team. thats why the pics were sms’ed to his phone. might also be why harts wife slept with cohle...to break up the team and divert, but she could have been simply manipulated into that.”

Very good reasoning, and I’ve thought about that girl as well. One thing I picked up on, the words that t-Mobile girl uses to seduce Cohle are nearly identical to the words that Rust uses to elicit a confession from the pervert in episode 3. “God doesn’t see them as flaws, he made us this way, etc”. She said “I learned that”. Learned it from who? From Cohle? From someone else? I can’t see Cohle coaching the girl to trap Marty, but maybe, if Cohle went around interviewing old leads in 2002, he had talked to Beth before Marty bumped into her, and gave her that spiel.

all interesting. until reading all this i wouldn’t have thought maggie is involved. my vote would have been some high up police or governor type stuff. but maybe it is the daughter and the father in law.

i agree the lawnmower guy seems like too big a dummy, and its clear that its not just one guy but a whole cult.

we just can’t figure out how you tie all this together in a one hour show. is it going to be a monger season ender, or still a one hour?

After reading your comments.

“The Detectives Curse”, seems to be where we are heading.

For Maggie to be involved or is covering something up would suggest she was a witness or escaped herself. I am curious about Audrey’s “paintings”. I don’t recall the “glimpse” of one with the “Black Star circle pattern”.

If Marty happens to see one of Audrey’s paintings with the pattern and maybe antlers, he is going to literally collapse.

Maggie may be covering up for her father ?

What was it Maggie’s mother said about her ? Marty said to Maggie “Even your mother thinks you can be ....” ?

I still would find it a stretch to pull Maggie’s father into this now. We hardly have any insight on him.

I think just one hour, but I imagine, if they go this route, they have already planted all the clues through out the rest of the show. So, they could do a quick-cut series of flashbacks, showing you glimpses of things that we’ve already seen, that, when you see them together, would tell the story. Imagine, for example, if you saw a quick series of clips of Audrey: in the fishing boat, saying “NO!” when Maysie says they should ask for grandpa’s help, then setting up the doll rape scene, then the drawings, then showing her doing some weird paintings with some of the symbology of the cult. All it would take would be 30 seconds of strategic filmmaking, and everyone would get it.

Here's her painting with the "black star tattoos":

Also, she always seems to be the artist in the family, always drawing, so I think the childhood drawing of the cult spiral on the Hart family wall is hers too:

Then, there is the painting/drawing in the Hart's bedroom that matches the mural at the mental hospital where the rescued girl was:

Maggie may be covering up for her father ?

hat was it Maggie’s mother said about her ? Marty said to Maggie “Even your mother thinks you can be ....” ?

Even your mother thinks you can be a ball-buster", and that was after Maggie's mother was telling her that there were things about men that were out of a woman's control, or something like that, and that she was making trouble for everyone. Maggie's mother sounded just like an abused wife making excuses for why she "doesn't rock the boat".

"I still would find it a stretch to pull Maggie’s father into this now. We hardly have any insight on him."

We didn't have any more insight into the Sheriff that they kidnapped last episode, besides that he was always suspicious of Cohle. Or the t-Mobile girl who showed up again to seduce Hart. I think the showrunners have no problem bringing back old, seemingly insignificant characters. Plus the actress that played Maggie confirmed in an interview that her parents will be involved in the last episode, the whole Hart family will.
