I intend to do that with tobacco this year.
/johnny
Yeah, are those weird looking seeds or what..kinda rectangular. My plan (I'm so far behind because I keep draggng these darned "mystery" tomatoes, and other stuff home from the Mom & Pop Nursery)..is to scarify some of the cucuzza, and soak some of the cucuzza seeds to see which, or a combo works best.
I can't believe it's noon, and I am already behind for the day. I nuked all the new "free stuff" this am to make sure it was bug free, then watered, then did greenhouse stuff. I need to stack more ligustrums I cut, and drag it off..
Plus tomorrow is our big City Wide Cleanup, and besides an old Dyson Vacuum Cleaner, I have nothing out on the curb. Plus I did see some things around the neighborhood that are out for the clean up that I would like to remove hinges, casters, and knobs from. That way I can quit spending money on them at Home Depot.
I was looking at TexasPrepper2's vid's yesterday on Youtube. He has one called Squash Bugs Must Die..He put one tablepoon of Dawn in one Gallon of watter, and then, with a hose of regular water, sprayed the base of the squash plants. The Squash bugs climbed up to the tops to escape the water, then he sprayed them with his dawn/water mix. Those suckers were dead within less than a minute..
Thanks for drier lint links!
That’s cool info about the goat shed. In the past I had used egg crate insulation not for temp control, but for room sound insulation to ward off street noises, etc.
Attached them to a large sheet of felt or cork board (also good for sound insulation) and hung them on the wall near the ceiling so the wall is covered.
“We’ve figured it out..Haven’t you noticed when we see you pull in, we put a bunch of free stuff out while you’re back in the herb section?”
ROFL!!
“Those suckers were dead within less than a minute..”
Oh wow! thanks!
You might want to do some quick research on cut potatos eyes.
I believe that you might cut off the sprouted eyes for planting , and leave in the sun for a couple of days so that they form a 'callous'.
Without the callous , there is a potential 'rotten spot' for bacteria to grow on, thus killing the growing plant.
Commercial potato breeders generally dip "seed potatos" in a powder to ward off any disease or bacterial rot. Just a suggestion .. YMMV
Vacuum cleaner cords make good, long extension cords, dead desk chairs usual have okay casters good for a couple hundred lbs, sewing machines have motors that can power stuff, dead lawn mowers have usable wheels, old gas BBQ grills can convert to nice charcoal grills if you find one made of cast metal. I dragged home an old wheelbarrow, and She made a planter from it. Plastic stuff uses special screws that are almost impossible to buy. Strip apart stuff with plastic covers/cases and save these hard to get screws. Computer towers have cooling fans that are handy. Alot of computers get trashed that are good, just need to re-format them to clean up the harddrive. I guess I should stop right here before I get too excited.
Oh yea, wife says when ever we go to Fredricksburg, we will hafta swing by your place and say hi or grab you to go with us. Ya’ll dont know her, but she lurks on this thread.
I have one of those. I accidentally melted a hole in the side of it though. I was using compressed air (3 psi) to get a really hot fire for working with bronze. I now have a separate area for metalworking. ;)
I love junk piles.

But for the moment... it's break time. Big glass of Kool-Aid(tm) and a cigarette. It's getting hot out there.

Oh WOW! Thanks for the heads up on the need to prep my potato sprouts.
So let me make sure I understand:
I do my potato cuts and set the cuts out on a pan to dry out?
How long do I leave them out?
Just looked at this article:
http://www.ehow.com/how_7934824_plant-eye-seed-potato.html
It just told me to set the pieces out for no more than a day or two.
They are saying I should set out even the treated seed potatoes in a shady area. So I’m wondering should I even attempt the grocery store potato I have sprouting?
What do they use for treatment?
I love junk piles too. I drag home all kinds of neat stuff.
I guess you have seen the youtubes on making a coffee can forge?
I plan on making some knives, but that will not happen very soon. That’s why I asked about your knives a few months back.
I've gotten this far on the new forge. I need to take it to my brother's and get it welded. And then I'll need the refractory cement to make the lining and the tuyer. But I'm close. I've got a leaf-blower on a variac for air that is adjustable to very low CFM.
I did have to make an 8 inch long sewing needle for a project earlier this week, but for little stuff like that, I really don't need a forge.

Texokie Congratulations- on your fitness, and all those gardening milestones too.
I have a link on crop roots depth and heights and interplanting, that some may be interested in:
http://www.harvesttotable.com/2009/04/interplanting_vegetables_root/
I have taken a turn around the perimeter of our little acre today. We are at 60 degrees today, and really nice sunshine. Was able to turn off the heaters. I am collecting the various pots and containers, and planning which ones will look the best and grow the best sitting on top of the retainer wall.
I checked out the stuff in the bottom of my composter. It is beautiful dark, and smells great. Still has some pieces of egg shells, but that won’t hurt anything.
I just came in for a bit to refresh my memory on interplanting and root depth, so I gotta go and get some work done. I am going to put some bags of potting soil over one of the beds to kill some weeds, and maybe plant some spinach, lettuce, carrots and onions outdoors.
There are a lot of sunny spots that will be shaded later when the leaves come out on the trees, so it’s a good place for lettuce. Will keep it cooler and growing longer without bolting.
If you did, I had forgotten. Thanks.
:-D
Thanks for link and for encouragement!
Also thanks for the reminder about lettuce needing to be somewhat shaded.
“I nuked all the new “free stuff” this am to make sure it was bug free, then watered, then did greenhouse stuff.”
Nuked? Won’t that kill them?
When I say nuked, I didn't mean microwaved them..I meant abused them with a high pressure blast of water, while hanging them upside down...The lettuce, cardoons stuff is in the garden now, shaded as it's very hot and sunny today.
And yes, I did have to go to the Mom & Pop Nursery again today to get more smart pots, and potting soil, even though I hadn't unloaded the ones I bought yesterday. The one kid who always loads my sutff laughed, and said, "We'll see you tomorrow."
I used a wheel for BBQ grill for years, just laid a round grill on top. Looking to do that again, If I don’t find a cast metal grill on the side of the road.
I have an air compressor, so I can add all the air to a forge that I want to. Add a lever type valve to the plumbing and enjoy control over the amount, kinda like bellows.
I have too much on my plate right now for real metal working. I need to catch up on a few HonnyDo’s from last year.
Putting in a water heater today. I was supposed to have somebody come do it and got all the fittings off of it, ready to take it off the riser. He got called in to work for seven straight days, so rather than re-connect everything and wait 8 days, I decided to do it myself, and save the $$$. I am half way right now, the easy half, where gravity helps, but next comes raising a 125lb heater into position with no hurts or leaks. Gee I hate plumbing work!
