What I'm looking for right now is a good tasting tomato to buy at the grocery store, but I don't know the names of tomatoes or which ones are the sweetest to eat at this time. What about Roma tomatoes..are they tasty, with some good flavor?
Other than Romas, all we have in the store is Tomatos, or vine ripened tomatos.
Try the romas, they often taste better than the others. They have more solids and are used for canning a lot.
I hate to say it but I don’t think I have ever bought a tomato at the store that tasted as good as a home grown.
We grow all our tomatoes in pots. We buy approx. 10-15 plants and grow all kinds of varieties of tomatoes. We have dogs and when we tried plants in beds, the dogs were eating all our tomatoes so we plant those in pots and keep them up on our deck!
I don’t have enough room to start tomato plants from seeds so I have to buy them from a local store with a garden center. The brand they mostly have is “Bonnie” and Bonnie has a great website, including all the vegetables they sell. Some of the tomatoes they list are proprietary types like ‘Bonnie Original’, but they also have other tomatoes of the type you might see in stores or at a farmer’s market. Here is their link for all tomatoes (makes me really crave a nice, juicy tomato sandwich right now!): http://bonnieplants.com/products/vegetables/tomato-varieties/all-tomatoes If you are looking for a container tomato, they have them listed by category, too & here is that link: http://bonnieplants.com/products/vegetables/tomato-varieties Hope this helps! :-)
If you want a sweet tomato, the little naturesweet brand grape type tomatoes in a clamshell are very sweet, and are good for snacking. They also keep well.
There is also an on the vine tomato, that comes in a sealed plastic bag. They are good for sandwiches.
BTW, patio tomatoes are specially bred to be very compact, and grown in a container..You might could sneak one of those amongst the balcony flowers.
Farmers market for good tomatoes. BTW Even when all I had was a balcony I always had a large pot with a Beefmaster tomato growing in it. A four or five gallon pot with one plant could keep you in eating tomatoes for the summer if you take care of it. And they are heirloom so you can save the seeds and replant the next year.
In our area I’ll sometimes bother Campari tomatoes. No matter the brand They always come in a little clear box and they are called cocktail size. For store-bought they’re pretty darn good.
