Led Zeppelin are being accused plagiarising the introduction of their iconic 1971 anthem, “Stairway To Heaven”, in a new lawsuit brought by the estate of Spirit guitarist Randy California and members of the band.

Business Week reports the estate – and group’s members – believe the acoustic introduction to “Stairway” was lifted from their 1968 instrumental, “Taurus.”

it is close but zeppelin’s structure, especially the last quarter of it, is superior. inspired maybe, but i don’t think stolen, unless someone in lz said theydid.

It is not stolen. It’s an arpeggiated version of a common chord progression ( im - i min/maj7 - im7 - IV7 ). “This Masquerade” by Leon Russell uses this movement. So does George Harrison’s ‘Something’, as well as ‘My Funny Valentine” and many others. You can’t copyright a chord progression.

I think Stairway sounds more like this -

(And I like this song lots better.)

I don’t know, I can hear the beginning of Stairway right at the 44 second mark. Interesting. Just can’t figure why they waited so freakin long.

When I hear of the group Spirit, I think of the song: I’ve Got a Line On You. I think Clapton was in that band.

STH should be banned from this universe. It is played non stop in every Guitar Center, badly, by every Jimmy Paige wannabee that won’t be, and has been since the place opened. And they have collectively killed it forevermore.

Same for every wannabee bar band that responds to the classic request “PLAY FEEEBIRD!” With their personal interpitation.

Ugh...

Money of course. The guys that they copped didn’t care and all was good. Now someone that is out for a winning lotto ticket, and that had nada to do with the song, haZ a sad about it. Ergo they ‘must be made whole’.

There is indeed a ‘hole’ in this. And I think we all know what it is.

No....Led Zeppelin did not copy all their material.....they expounded dramatically on a lot of fairly primitive blues numbers

As did most rock and roll and rock bands.....the Stones for example who also expanded country original riffs via Gram Parsons and Bobby Keyes.....Clapton too....both genres too btw

If you want the long explanation I can do that.

Very few popular music acts didn’t incorporate something prior

The early Miss Delta boys heard it first in some form from Patton or Broonzy or some old cowboy or minstrel who God forbid might have even been white and taught them real guitar.... perish the thought

No

Clapton was not in Spirit

Clapton was with Mayall......Yardbirds.....Cream....Blind Faith.....Delaney and Bonnie ...derek and the dominos....and himself and reams of invited stuff

Spirit is a perennial most underrated band nominee

As did most rock and roll and rock bands

That's true. Anyway, their high point was as the backing band to Donovan.
