The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

You are completely amazing! With or without a good red wine, my rows will never be straight. Anyway, I like Boone’s Farm Sangria. (I always told Mom there was something wrong with me but she thought I was making up excuses to get out of work.)

When I read the garden thread, I open up a blank document and copy and paste so that I can find the information when I need it. These people are so generous with their extensive knowledge; additionally, they’re a lot of fun! Is it possible to share too much gardening information? Goodness gracious, keep it coming!

Oranges, maters and berries--it doesn't get any better! P.S. If that guy values education, you probably educated the living daylights out of him so I'm certain that he appreciates you! People pay to learn the things you teach us. It's the gift that keeps on giving!

—The secret is bungee cords..—

That’s a good idea. Better than duct tape or zip ties. And re-usable, too.

Building while alone is a challenge. Sometimes it takes 2 hands, a shoulder, and a knee to get things going your way.

When I was remodeling the back porch alone a few years ago, I made “helpers” by nailing small pieces of wood on either side of a post so the cross piece could not move out of place when I raised the post with cross beam in place. I had an entire load bearing wall removed, so I had to put up temp post and cross beams to hold the roof up. Everything went smooth as glass all the way through the project till I was taking down the temp beams. I knocked a post out that had a cross beam on it and I hit the post too hard and the post and beam came crashing down, resulting in one broken window and one terrified wife when she heard the crash. Almost according to plan!

YEP! RAIN! I LUV IT!

My neighbors pond is overflowing, my duck pond is overflowing (even though I was letting the water evaporate so I could clean some muck out of it.), we even have runoff in the bottom part of the property.
Unfortunately, I had to dig my greenhouse door out to get it open. All the runoff swept leaves and mud in front of the door.

I don't expect a major change in the lake bed, but I'll it head down in a bit to check out. It's funny how the river can be running in Bandera, down to south of English Crossing, then goes underground until it's near the dam.

How is it in your neck of the woods? You're on prime watershed and aquifer recharge zone.

Another thing about the physicist/geologist that you will appreciate, maybe. He said he has a shop where he builds and repairs things. I don’t know the extent of his shop but think I will see that within a couple of weeks. I know shops are important to you so I’ll check it out to see if it meets with your criteria of a good shop. If it doesn’t meet your standards, I will dump him. :o)

"If that guy values education, you probably educated the living daylights out of him."

He did learn some things when we were in my garden. There were the plants he had never seen before, especially the Egyptian Walking Onions, the Deck Corn and the net room I put together with the carrots and gobs of onions growing in there and he asked what that big black round ball was in the garden. I told him that is a composter and he said it looked like a satellite had dropped into the garden.

One of the sunflowers has an opened flower on it today.

It's all good. two rain barrels, and a kiddie pool, then I ran out of things to put rain in. Wish I had one of those expensive catchment systems that someone else did the work on!

Some of the bridges, and low water crossings here in town were barricaded when I went across town to my Mom's. Had to take a circuitous route. A freeper who lives a few blocks from me said he has water over the dam behind his house. I don't think there's been water over that dam in almost a year.

Wow! That’s real rain. All we have here is so light, I can’t even see it through the windows.

From the radar, it looks like Houston is about to catch what you got.

That storm line broke into 2 sections, going north and south of us. :(

We have a very small area of yellow over us on the radar now, but Houston is about to get clobbered.

It is actually raining pretty good now, along with a few boomers. We will see what the rain gauge says later.

It has rained bucket after bucket here so I went out to check the old rain gauge that is sitting on the table out there and it had fallen over so I don’t know how much rain I got. I still have rain gauge issues and I’m madder than hell and not going to take it any more! That means, I have to get another rain gauge, need to see if Lowes has gotten them in.

I got the packets of two new types of lettuce that are supposed to love hot weather. One is Bronze Mignonette and the other is Little Gem. This rain is supposed to keep on for days but if there is a decent break, I’ll get this seed planted.

When I went out, there was one ripe blackberry so I picked it and have eaten it and it tastes like a fairly sweet blackberry, imagine that.

Thought you guys might find this funny: I mentioned to my brother that I was planting okra partly as a windbreak. He has now dubbed that row of my garden as “Okra Wind-free.”

Yes, rain in the forecast, at lease some everyday.

We are leaving Thursday to go to the old country, be back late Sunday night. Hope to time things to stop in Lake Charles La. to stock up on Boudin, yum! On the road again...

Thank God for timers for the garden irrigation system.

We are about to get hit by a storm line. Been watching it for an hour or so, may get some real rain from this one.

Hope you had a good Memorial Day. We had typical BBQ chicken meal, and gave thanks to our Lord for those that died so we could live free.

That didnt sound just right, but you know what I meant. Still groggy from sleep meds and others. Maybe I should walk outside into the cold rain and wake up. :)

I live in Everett WA. It’s near Seattle.
I have 2 plots in a community garden. It’s not doing well, except for flowers and berries, and things previous tenants got established, which is flowers, herbs and berries.
These west coast planting schedules are not working for me. Last year I used Montana planting schedules and at least had lettuce. This year I don’t even have lettuce. I harvested 3 radishes yesterday. The rest all had something wrong with them. I haven’t tasted them yet. I might get a few beets, but the Swiss chard, carrots and parsnips have done nothing.
Yesterday I put out a pepper that I started indoors. I have 3 more. Peppers did not survive last year. All month Ive been putting out tomatoes started inside in March. So far they’re doing OK. Last year they started out good, then something happened and they got brown spots and basically rotted before ripening. I did salvage some, but not near what it first looked like I would have.
Last year Italian parsley was the only herb I succeeded in growing from seeds. Unfortunately another tenant ripped it out. I planted it again this year but it hasn’t done anything. There is plenty of the other kind.
In the fall another tenant gave me some strawberry plants she didnt want. They were growing like weeds I guess. Most of those have survived and have berries on them. I’ve grown strawberries a lot in the past. The raspberries are on schedule. The previous tenant got those established, of course. I knew I couldn’t and that’s why I wanted that plot.
It will really be an embarrassment if I can’t even grow zucchini. I don’t know what they’re supposed to look like when they first come up because there’s no picture on the envelope. I’ve never grown it before, just used excess that other people wanted to get rid of.
Somebody gave me onion sets too. I didnt really want them although I do like onions. So far most if them aren’t getting bigger but aren’t dying either.
