I may be mistaken, but it looked to me like the dog was stalking the child from the get-go. The fact that dog apparently tried to hamstring the child leads me to believe that he saw the kid as lunch.
I think you are right.
My fellow dog rescuers were divided on whether the dog should have been euthanized. Since the owners readily gave him up to a very high kill shelter, there was no chance for the dog.
