WASHINGTON (RNS) – Americans are showing more tolerance for a range of behaviors, with sex between unmarried adults, medical research on stem cells from human embryos, and doctor-assisted suicide all showing record highs and increases in “moral acceptability” from last year.
The Gallup poll’s annual “moral acceptability” scale has been conducted since 2001 and charts shifting cultural attitudes on a number of hot-button social issues. In the 2014 list released Friday (May 30), Gallup researchers said 12 of the 19 categories reflected “levels of moral acceptance that are as high or higher than in the past.”
“Americans largely agree about the morality of several issues,” Gallup researchers said. “Most say birth control is acceptable but that extramarital affairs are wrong. However, other issues show clear, substantial divides. These differences are largely explained by party identification, but previous research has shown that age also plays a factor.”
Three issues — sex between an unmarried man and woman, medical research on embryonic stem cells and doctor-assisted suicide — showed a slight increase in acceptability from 2013. Most of the other issues were mostly unchanged.

easy to explain the acceptance at least. tv and movies paved the way. Hollywood has always been about propaganda. never showing a judge as a white male, always having morgan freeman as a president. there is a new crime show, I think on tnt. the trailors show a white female detective, a black male detective, and in case you can’t guess, the first criminal shown is a blond, white male.
I noticed that a recent review of a movie in the newspaper said something like “has sex, harsh language, and some cigarette smoking”. We are to be warned, now, about smoking portrayed in the movie, but nothing about the encouragement of homosexual behavior in the scripts. I couldn’t believe it.
I don’t see where any of the national disgusting sexual and moral degradations are going to be reversed.
I’m going to be 70 years old in a few weeks, and I hope I don’t live to see what’s going to happen to our (formerly) dearly beloved country.
But a woman running away from muslim family and preaching against Islam is a hate crime...

Marrying first is almost a quaint notion anymore among the over 25 year olds I know.
My own co-worker is moving in with the BF, buying a house with him, sharing everything ...yet feels that marriage is “too much commitment.” WTF? My husband and I didn’t buy a home together until we were in our 40’s!
I’m glad my own daughter is not doing this — she knows if she did I’d raise holy hell — and so does that boyfriend of hers. No big wedding from us if they decide to go in that direction.
I get that this is from a Christian site, so they lump all sin in as equal, but from a secular point of view, you can't lump hetrosexual sex in with assisted suicide. It comes of as ridiculous and , IMO, is partially responsible for the very attitudes it is bemoaning.
I was one of those guys who chose that. However, the society views it as highly exceptional at best, stupid and self-depriving at worst. I don’t know, but at least I don’t have the child custody fight with my ex-girlfriend like a lot of those who poked fun of me now do.
Polls of this sort remind me of the poll taken on Lot’s front porch in Sodom. The whole town was in favor of raping Lot’s guests and only six were opposed. We know how that turned out.
Yeah, and at least you never contracted a V.D.. And you wanted to focus on your education. Then you wanted to focus on work and success, and the thousand other excuses that straight guys who avoid vaginas use.
I hope you are happily married now and all, but seriously, it is a real psychological issue that some guys have. It's an emotional problem having to do with botched parenting and other things. But you have to understand why some people see it as odd.
It is a problem. An it’s tragic. What’s the real problem is that there’s a culture for this, a massive echo chamber that says it’s okay, when that’s not neccessarily the case.

Yeah, it all makes me sick. I’m not even an old guy yet, but much of society already pretty much tries to throw the myth out there that your kid is pretty much genetically programmed to promiscuity and you should treat them as if they will just do it. It’s revolting enough to hear that, then it’s worse to hear plenty of other things I am tired of mentioning. I don’t even watch Broadcast TV anymore. I just don’t think the additional payments for anything other than the internet is worth it. So much nowadays isn’t worth it. I also wish that some of those Hollywood people would quit pushing the “weak, incompetent, father” trope. Because frankly, even with my less than perfect circumstances, would gladly paint a better picture in my stories than what I was dealt. Any day.

I didn’t complete my education before I got married and had a child. I still pursued additional education because my field that I had previously studied for got screwed, and I ended up with unemployment and schooling all over again. Thankfully, this involved cheaper online school for the Masters Program, and I got to be with my first Son, more often after my wife’s maternity leave, and we eventually could make the switch in terms of who is the stay at home parent. In reality, education is never completed, and you don’t have ideal circumstances to get married. You have to make that commitment decision on your own, and make that commitment.
I agree with dbehsman. It bothers me also to see a girl who just gives herself casually to so many guys. It’s playing roulette with the relationship as to whether or not she’ll like you enough to stick around with you. Second, it raises concerns that she has developed issues of being able to commit in relationships and needs some serious help and healing. As for marriage, it was a matter of me finding someone who really wanted to commit, and while the virginity question was tough, it did work, with time.
The big problem in today’s society is people are thinking so much about the immediate gratification, and not so much about future sustainability. Debt, chastity, and so on are all consequences of that attitude, and that same attitude is why America is tragically falling apart.
