A LGBTQ pride celebration at D.C.’s Woodrow Wilson High School led to a big surprise for students Wednesday, as Principal Pete Cahall came out as gay in front of the crowd.
Cahall tells WNEW’s Matt DelSignore that he just turned 50 and was “tired of hiding.”
“I would be a hypocrite if I tell kids to ‘be who you are’ and not be who I am,” he said.
He admits that he was nervous at the thought of sharing his secret in front of hundreds of students. Before his announcement, his hands were shaking, he said.
But students were very supportive, responding with cheers and applause. Senior Aidan Parisi, who helped to organize Pride Day event, says a lot of jaws dropped, including his.
But, Parisi said, “I was extremely proud of him for feeling comfortable to come out.”
The notoriously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church is planning a demonstration at the school on Monday. The group’s website says it’s precisely because the school boasted that it would be the first public high school in the city, and maybe even the country, to host an LGBTQ pride event.
Wilson students are planning a counter-rally. Westboro Baptist Church is also planning several other demonstrations in the area in the coming days. The annual Capital Pride festival is also going on in D.C. through June 17.
Mayor Vincent Gray, who attended the high school’s Pride Day, told reporters that the Westboro Baptist church “can go straight to hell.”

It is so strange all these liberals, gays, etc. they always use children (often captive audiences) to be their kingdom or audience. It really is, queer, in the real sense of the word.
If I were a student there I’d get up and leave and say... uh this is school aren’t we supposed to be learning skills to get us a, you know, JOB?

Blah blah...Separate the moral implications for the sake of argument but how exactly does GLBT enrich the society or culture? I mean really...of what benefit does it serve for the nation? To claim that we are ‘more tolerant’ or sexually enlightnened diversity? Its just one big crock of warm stinky brown. Keep the sexual in private but therein lies the issue for the insecure GLBT. They have to flaunt it in the public sphere. Pox on them all and their supporters.

It’s highly inappropriate to mentions one’s sexual preferences in front of the student body. He needs to be fired.

How could they allow him to remain in that school?
Any school holding a "LGBTQ Pride Celebration" is so far over into the dark side that how could any parents allow their children to remain at that school?
At some point doesn't it get so bad that even parents who work (not home to home school) realize it's better to keep a child home alone than to give the perverts a free reign? Guess not. No shortage of evil presented and celebrated in broad daylight.

But the Boy Scouts now allow Queer Scout Masters to take the kids out on overnight camping trips -— and sit around and roast wieners!
Schools should stick to the 3 Rs and nothing else.
Very depressing. Who the heck ever cared who their high school principal slept with? But now that’s the only thing that matters.

Jerry Sandusky could have been a school principle and living the dream unscathed instead of being a dreaded assistant football coach in jail for life.
