Well, the difference between Cates and Shields is that while Shields has a beautiful face (and I love natural thick eyebrows on women, short of a unibrow, and loathe the pencil-thin horror), her body is more boyish and tall and flat chested (I believe the contrast between her and the body double they used in “Lagoon” was ridiculous). Phoebe, while petite, is clearly more voluptuous in “Paradise.” The one thing that always bugged me for the longest time is when she cut her hair. Long hair (like she had in “Fast Times...”) and she was a stunner. The boy cut was a visceral turnoff.

Remember when you had a box to adjust the outside antenna for each channel ? I had to do that until we got cable when it was first offered around 1982/83. How primitive it all seemed to be in those days.

I even remember as a little kid going to the tv store to get a Magnavox (around 1977 or so), and that was a BIG deal then. TVs were not cheap, and could cost upwards or over $1000 for a modest set (in ‘70s dollars). I always wanted a floor model back then, but my parents didn’t want to pay that kind of money.

RE Antenna:

Yes, I do remember those boxes. They also had the round “UHF Antenna” on them. Connected to the back of the TV with little spade connectors, and to a servo for the VHF antenna (the monster) on the roof.

We got “HBO” around 1983 as well; shortly after “First Blood” (Rambo) came out of the theaters; I remember it was one of the very first movies I got to see on HBO. It had it’s own separate antenna on the roof, and was also a small box with a backlit push button switch. I think we had to tune to channel 4 or some other empty channel.

Primitive now, yes, looking back; but back then, awesome!!! I was on a VHS taping frenzy for a few years after, getting a movie collection built... they’ve all been relegated to the trash heap, now.

I’m not sure how much our console TV cost, but I do remember it was a BIG deal for the folks to get it. They’d scrimped and saved for it. Dad had a stroke that summer, that’s why I remember it so well.

Funny how some things stand out in your mind, related to other events...

Cable TV came through in 1976 and my parents got HBO then.

I still remember movies that I first saw on HBO when we first got it, even it they were not very good ones.

I still remember the novelty as I had a black and white TV in my bedroom..

HBO would play a bunch of movies in the summer then in fall the TV networks would air cut up versions of them as part of their fall lineups, with commercials. It would make me appreciate HBO.

I remember the HBO theme music from the 80’s; it was majestic and regal. A neoclassical piece of audio theater.

I often have had thoughts of Ronald Reagan, shirtless and running on a beach in slow motion with that music playing.

It’s very inspiring and stimulating.

“It was about 1968 when we got our color TV - either a Motorola or Magnavox (I know it began with an “M”) Console TV - had a, AM/FM Stereo radio in one side, a 25 inch color CRT screen in the center, and a turntable “Hi-Fidelity” Stereo in the other side.”

Lies. All LIES!!!

You had a “Frank Rizzo” TV, and you LOVED it!

Svengoolie is on Saturday nights at 10pm PST, some pretty “interesting” films are shown on that show and the guy does a good job with puns and some interspersed attempts at “bad” humor.

I remember seeing “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and “Breakout” over and over on HBO back in the early days of it; my sister lived in Manhattan and I stayed with her for a month one summer in the late 70s.

Still love “the Grail”... one of the best comedies ever.

I just don’t get Monty Python humor.

“Breakout”: With Robert Duval and Bronson? That’s a good one!

Here’s a very similar picture:

The wood furniture on this one’s a little fancier that ours was, but basically the same.

Brit humor is different, yeah...

But that movie was hilarious. My son and his friends discovered it and “Animal House” too. They love it.

“..thinking sexual...”

I can’t even begin to fathom that... and I don’t need that imagery... too Putin-esque...

That’s the one with the bunnies that were killing people? I just don’t get “it”. But that’s ok.

OTOH, I find “Animal House” to be AWESOME!

Oh, no. It went the way of all things.

TV tube went tango-uniform, then we pulled it out and shoved a smaller TV in there - independent of the console controls (talk about ghetto!!!) and then the stereo went, the radio, and all it was was a hunk of furniture with electronics that didn’t work.

We chucked it sometime in the early 80s.

Heavy as hell, I remember lifting it with a couple buddies. The wood wasn’t that laminated veneer crap; it was solid hardwood.

Mom was not happy to see it go though... she got attached to things.

RR would definitely NOT return Khent’s affections....

He would be polite about it, but he’d let the little flamer know in no uncertain terms...

RE Bunnies:

No, it was ONE killer Rabbit. And the humor of it was that it had this fearsome reputation, and everyone thought it was some monstrous beast.

When they saw that it was “a li’l Bunny Rabbit” and went after it, it just ripped them to shreds.

The battle of the Black Knight at the bridge is classic too.

Animal House... outstanding laugh a minute. Love that movie. Belushi was at his best...
