The reason I declined the offer for the pain meds for my hip was I thought that the pain was warning me to rest it. I only have pain when having to walk up slight up hill grades or for long periods of time. Like walking around in a Wal Mart super store. I figured the pain meds would let me just ignore the pain and let me do more damage to my hip. The pain goes away if I set down and rest for a few min.

Your rice in a sock sounds like a good idea. I guess it could be used as a cold pack also?

I believe these are climbing cut worms, since the damage is typically a foot above the ground. I have read that they ignore all such stuff around the base. I have only tried cardboard so far.

I’ll need to recon after dark around midnight to see if I can find whatever it is for sure.

We have a bunch of radishes. Hubby got some seeds that had the word cabbage, but they turned out to be radishes. I’ll use some in salads, but there is not way to use them all that way.

Anyone have any other recipes or ways to use radishes? I know they are considered a good cover crop, so when all else fails there’s the compost heap.LOL

I thought they took celebrex off the market? I had a friend that was taking that and loved it, but it led to other health issues, so her doc told her she had to quit taking it.

Tramdol blocks the pain, but doesn't do anything for the inflammation. It also contains Acetaminophen, and that's not always explained very well by the docs, so people sometimes get too much by taking tramdol and Tylenol.

I am a real wuss when it comes to pain, but I have avoided taking anything for years by using the heat treatments where ever it hurts. Recently headaches have caused me to take aspirin alternated with Tylenol, and I use that very sparingly.

My doc told me to take a product containing glucosimine chondroiton like osteo bi flex to help reverse or slow down osteo arthritis and osteoporosis, and he usually doesn't have much positive to say about supplements. I checked it out, and research supports a benefit from glucosimin chondroiton to help build cartilage. If you get the kind that has MSM, that is also supposed to help relieve pain.

So many options to try. One benefit of modern medicine.

Potatoes seem to be my best crop so far this year.

Your weather pattern sounds similar to ours. I haven’t had to use much of our stored water either. What I did use has been replenished.

This is good, since our supply is not as good as we felt we needed due to the leak in the swimming pool. That was about 1500 gallons that we had to go ahead and use/drain off to repair the leak.

Since then we have only collected about 1000 gallons to get us through the regular summer drought.

I wondered if it was something I’d done to my figs as they’re doing the exact same thing. All the above ground limbs are dead and they’re coming up at the base from the roots.

Good to know it’s not something I’d done. I’ll try to remember to mulch them next winter and see if that makes a difference and maybe cover if it gets below 15F.

Yes, it can be used as a cool pack too. I think you are wise to not ignore the pain and allow the body to rest when needed.

I had an issue with my left hip and couldn't go up and down the stairs. Finally it was painful enough, that I noticed it when laying down on the couch to watch TV. That couch didn't have much support in the cushions.

I reoriented it, added a therapeutic layer of cushion and bought a wedge so that I could watch TV leaning back or laying on my right side. So I would lay on my right side and put the heat pad or rice sock on the left hip.

It cleared up and I was able to resume going up and down the stairs without a ton of pain. Had I taken pain meds, I would have never figured out what I was doing to contribute to the situation.

Thanks for posting that. Victory Gardens are making a comeback, if the traffic at the garden centers is any indication.

In remembrance of D-Day a short 70 years ago today.

This is not a Flanders poppy but is very special nonetheless. It came up in a winter sown jug of Canterbury Bells which didn't germinate. When I saw I had a poppy in the corner of the jug because of the drooping bud, I set it out in the sun to bloom.

Since there was only one and it had bloomed later than my other poppies, there was no way to cross pollinate it and this kind of poppies do not self-pollinate.

I was heartsick and never found any seeds for a red poppy as fully double as this. The petals were like silk.

I had a terrible time getting the right code to embed my photo from flickr, don't do it much and they keep changing stuff. I am in the middle of the nastiest job I have ever done, had to come in and rest, now must go back out.

I let everything go last year because I was so depressed over the death of my son. It is one gawdawful mess this year. The worst part is I was mail ordering roses and got one that produces the nastiest thorns. To make a long story short, the roses died all the way back because of the winter and I have one bag filled with monster thorny brush, will start a second. Then some pokeweed got loose and seeded itself and I will have to whack that. And so much more.

I could not find any paid help that will mess with the mess the roses have caused. I have tears all over my arms. I was out there literally crying from the pain before I came in. I do wear leather gloves; it's my back and side that will only let me work about 15 minutes, then I have to rest.

I identified our first Trinidad Scorpion pepper emerging from under the leaves today.
It’s about as big as my thumb.

We have a string of orange poppies growing along our gravel drive at the lakefront. They come back, with a few more, every year.

I had Japanese beetles all over the place.

White geraniums did the trick.

Thx for that. I think I'll get a few for the greenhouse. I only saw that one...but if there's one, there's probably more.

I’m so sorry. Do you have any Bactine or Neosporin + Pain Relief? Rose thorns are nasty, and so are infections.

Celebrex had a cousin that was removed for bad behavior, Vioxx(sp) and another cousin, too, but celebrex is still good. I asked my dr about it being fearful of heart attack with my being overweight, he said not to worry, more people die from Tylenol than celebrex. Celebrex is supposed to go generic very soon. It’s original patent expired late last year, but they get some kind of grace period to market their own generic or something like that, depending on which website you believe.

Tramadol does nothing for the inflammation, just pain, and thats what I need. A lot of anti-inflammation drugs do not play well together, some have that warning on them.

The glucosimine chondroiton does work and some drs do recommend it, but I was getting the triple strength kind and taking triple doses of that to get relief.

At this point in my arthritis situation, I don’t care what they give me or its side effects. I need relief. Now. Yesterday would be even better. /rant :)

It’s my understanding that not all Tramadol contains Acetaminophen. If it does, it’s vital to monitor usage closely, and to avoid an overdose (which doesn’t take much) and alcohol.

From addictionblog.org:

No, Tramadol does not contain acetaminophen.

In fact, generic tramadol hydrochloride is one option doctors prescribe often for pain relief because it is both efficient and less addictive. We review tramadol combinations and risks of taking acetaminophen here.

Brand Names That Contain Tramadol

ER = (extended release)
* = (contains acetaminophen)

Ryzolt
Ultracet *
Ultram
Ultram ER
BE AWARE: Ultracet (a brand name version of tramadol), combines both tramadol and acetaminophen.

Tramadol Hydrochloride And Acetaminophen Together For Pain

Tramadol/acetaminophen combination tablets are generally effective for the treatment of pain without any serious adverse effects. Tramadol efficacy depends on your general health, age, and dosing details. But if you want to avoid the combination, avoid ULTRACET.

Acetaminophen Dangers

While acetaminophen is generally safe for short term use, there are some special considerations when considering this medicine for pain relief. First, you should not to exceed the FDA acetaminophen maximum total daily dose (4 grams/day). If you take acetaminophen over a long period of time or take it in higher than recommended doses, liver and kidney damage can result, as well as bleeding from the small and large intestines and the stomach. Large doses of acetaminophen are the main risk, but liver problems have been reported after small to moderate dosing of acetaminophen for long periods of time.

Additionally, doctors warn that you avoid alcohol while taking acetaminophen-containing medications. This is because alcohol and acetaminophen can lead to a life threatening complications called “alcohol acetaminophen syndrome” which cause acute liver failure. Although there is no official threshold for alcohol and acetaminophen, experts recommend that heavy drinkers shouldn’t take more than 2 grams of acetaminophen daily.
