I may have to give up the Internet [Updated at #94]
Self | 6/12/'14 | Zionist Conspirator

Posted on 06/12/2014 6:51:39 PM PDT by Zionist Conspirator

I'll try to make this as short as possible, because I never know when a page is going to load.

As you may recall, I started having connection issues about three and a half months ago. After eliminating every other issue I wound up getting another (rebuilt) computer.

Late last month the same issue began showing up so I returned the computer to the repair shop at which I bought it. They hooked it up to their connection and announced that there was nothing wrong with it.

As recently as last Sunday this thing was working like a top. Now not only will it not play videos, it doesn't even want to load still pictures and sometimes doesn't want to load a page at all. I've been on the phone twice today with my ISP. The first guy remote controlled my computer, checked out my browser, and said it was working great (which it was for him). Then after hanging up I was once again having the greatest difficulty loading pages. I called again and was told there was absolutely nothing wrong with the network. So it's not the computer, it's not the modem (either one of them, since they both have the same problem), and it's not the network. I'm losing my ability to surf the Net at all and apparently there is nothing wrong with anything.

The DSL is sending someone to check out our wiring over the weekend (I'm grasping at straws that it may have something to do with the days of flash flooding saturating the soil and perhaps doing some harm to the phone lines, though we have no problems with the telephone itself). If he once again tells me there's nothing wrong with anything and to take the computer to the shop (been there, done that) I'll simply have to cancel my Internet account. I can't afford to keep paying this for service that's indistinguishable from dial-up.

I don't want to do this. But it looks like that's what it's going to come to barring a miracle. I'm absolutely sick about this. Everyone's jerking me around and disclaiming responsibility, every else says it's working for them, but i can't do anything.

I've been online for seveenteen years, the past seven on DSL, and never had any problems at all until just a few months ago. Furthermore 5/24 was my fifteenth anniversary as a FReeper.

Please don't tease me by asking if my computer is plugged in. Not funny, guys. Don't try to give me advice because I won't understand a word of it. And I don't have any laptops, smart phones, or any such thing . . . just one desktop plugged into one phone jack.

Please forgive my tone, but I am at my wit's end. I hope I will somehow be able to stay online, but if no one can find anything wrong, I don't know what to do other than cancel. And no, we don't have cable out here.

I hope this isn't the end, but if it is . . . well, I'll miss all of you. And I'm well aware of what an unpleasant jackass I am most of the time. Thanks to Jim Rob and everyone else for putting up with me.

Nuther thing:

IF router/modem (NOT only modem)... Was the modem reset? If it was, it needs to be bridged to work with the router. it is a simple software setting, but it will do some weird things if it is not.

IF router, AND router is ‘G’ series, AND running WinVista, Win7, Win8, Router will be the problem... MAY be able to be fixed with a firmware upgrade, if not, replace the router with an ‘N’ Series.

I’ll assume you checked your keyboard and mouse connections. If not, do so.

Did liquid get spilled on them?

Can you get your hands on a second set of keyboard/mouse to test on your system?

How old is the system? What version of windows you using?

Do you have backups of all your data? If not, do so!

” I’d love to believe that someday years in the future, fiber optics will replace the old cables, yet it seems impossible today that such a big company would ever invest the money again.”

Our TV and internet come into the house via fiber optics.

OK one stupid question. Are you using a wireless keyboard and mouse? If so RFI {Radio Frequency Interference} could be the culprit and would explain why remote access works. In short if your mouse and keyboard is not getting it’s commands to your machine then you are locked out and it will not obey your commands. You could have several issues like this and DSL intermittent issues all compounding each other.

BTW chances are when you take the computer to the shop they will use their own keyboard and mouse.

Another question. Any new electronics brought into your home about the time the issue showed up like say a security system? They are notorious for wreaking havoc on other electronics. I’ve seen a stores security system take control over a motorized wheelchair before.

Wireless gear being interfered with doesn’t behave quite like this. Have 2 machines side by side with one having a paired Logitech mouse and keyboard, the other having a standalone Logitech mouse and a Kensington keyboard from the previous decade, closer to the previous century.

It’s actually fairly obvious when one device is getting low batteries, out of the Logitech gear. The interference is major and noticeable as skittering cursor on the mouse and dropped keystrokes on the keyboard. The Kensington keyboard just loses keystrokes to itself before going dead, but isn’t affected at all by the other three devices no matter how they’re doing.

Neither affects the connection at all for any device, wired or wireless.

Going back to the prior question about a failing mouse or keyboard. Windows isn’t at all shy about letting you know, with wired kit. You get the device disconnect/reconnect sounds each and every time they drop out and have to pick back up.

Some friends up one of the local canyons had Hughes Net (satelite), they couldn’t wait to get the same service we have, which is bad enough:)

It may be your !@#$% provider.
One thing I found, when the company tech is on line with you, he is using a dedicated strong signal line.
When you go off line from him you get the standard crap.
Again, you may have corroded contacts.

I have had a “Zeus” type virus, took my local IT guy (from the feed store) to get rid of it. Not sure if that was the one where he had to buy a special disc to get rid of that one or one of the others. I learned that some anti-virus outfits actually create some of the viruses so you buy
their stuff.

Short temper? Crap I have PTS from my experience. Darn near took my PC out to the range. The only thing that stopped me was I couldn’t replace the ammo.

I have noticed issue since the W-8 updates the other night. My Browser is now crashing several times a day and some pages once just slow now take forever. I'm on dial up though. I see the This page can not be displayed notice about one in three times when I get a site to load. The new W-8 and the IE IMO is buggy as all get out. For example what I am typing now can not be corrected unless I hit preview first. It will type over my already written text erasing it.

ZC's issue though may be bad downloads due to bad connection not just slow but corrupted by static etc. That can cause havoc because it also corrupts updates.

I had a wireless keyboard and mouse do that straight out of the box with fresh batteries. The cursor acted like it had the DT's even set as slow as possible and the keyboard wasn't working right either.

If everyone else can get it to work and using remote access works also but the computer is going crazy after disconnecting from remote access that IMO points to mouse or keyboard simply due to the fact that is what changed when it stopped working. It could be internals of mouse or keyboard causing issues believe it or not including causing the RFI from it's internal components. Even wired mouse and Keyboards can go bad and do havoc.

Quite possibly you’re right. I don’t run 8 so I can’t even begin to address that, and corruption could account for a lot. I’d even wonder about the hdd...a chkdsk might be in order, as odd as that idea sounds.

Just doesn’t seem quite like any of the behaviours I’ve seen from a broken mouse or keyboard before, which is saying a fair bit...the whole reason I went full wireless was the sheer number of destroyed mice and keyboards, between awkward setup causing extra wear and tear, accidental damage from the cats, and just cheap crap wearing out.

None of this seems quite characteristic. If the cables were failing, there’d be the sound I mentioned. If the keyboard was failing, usually there’s a key or region of keys that noticeably misbehave. With the mouse, depending on what fails, you see the light out on optical, or you see the buttons work but not tracking, or tracking but no buttons, or every button but the one wearing out, etc.

It’s well worth borrowing a set to test with, or even buying a cheap set and keeping them as backups. I’m just not totally convinced it’s the only cause...this feels like it might be one of the bizarre outliers.

The reason I seconded the idea of getting the telephone wiring inspected is I have issues myself when it’s raining and the wind comes from a certain direction...part of where it connects at the roof is worn and when it’s wet, the phone becomes very noisy and connection slows down to about 1/4 of its usual speed.

Honestly, I think it’s 2 problems, or a zebra...just not the same zebra you’re looking at.

I have spoken to the man from ATT and according to him there are two other homes in this subdivision that are having the exact same trouble I am, and a fourth not in this neighborhood but in the vicinity. He said that there was some sort of damage to the box everyone here is hooked up through (whether storm damage or a power surge) and it would have to be repaired. They're supposed to start working on it tomorrow, and should have it fixed by the end of the week. If after that time I'm still having this trouble (unlikely since the "symptoms" are identical in all four cases) then it's something else and I should call back keep harassing them.

This is good news. Hopefully the problem has been found and will be taken care of, and I won't have to cancel my account.

Unfortunately, just before the weekend I learned of another, much more serious problem that has come up in my life which sort of puts this one on the back burner and which must be dealt with immediately (of course I'm having to stew over the weekend before I have a chance to do anything about it). I don't want to go into it here, but I didn't need this right now. It seems that for the past three years I haven't had any peace. It's been literally one thing after another during this time. I'll let you all know if it's resolved, because if it isn't I definitely want have a home Internet connection, technical problems or no technical problems.

AdminModerator--Could you please label this thread as "updated?" Thank you.
