There were many unsung heroes on 9/11 — and some of them were dogs. Over 300 search and rescue dogs were deployed to Ground Zero and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, to help find people trapped in the rubble.

Now, over a decade later, not all of these canine heroes are still with us. As a way to preserve the memories and remind us about their service, photographer Charlotte Dumas tracked down some of the veteran animals in 2011.

These amazing dogs came from all over the country to work together and save lives on 9/11 — and here are their furry faces, ten years after their service.

Whenever I'm in NYC I make it a point to make at least a brief visit to Ground Zero.On one such trip we ate at the Burger King that was, basically, right across the street from the WTC.After eating we took a stroll down that side street and came upon a small fire station. It was a nice day so there were several firemen just hanging out in front of the station. We got to talking to them and they told us that their station lost something like a half dozen guys on 9/11 (can't recall the exact number).

Powerful,powerful stuff.
