Just now read this about the steroids. That should take care of the rash pretty quickly.
Poison Ivy (if it is). I used to get this really bad--entire limbs would be covered, had to be wrapped in gauze, and calamine lotion (which works well for some folks) did nothing for me. After years of enduring a couple of weeks of abject misery, I found a method which worked for me.
I would rinse the affected area in water as hot as I could stand--which actually felt good--better than scratching or rubbing, wash it with soap, rinse some more, and pat it dry with paper towels. Then the miserable part, I'd soak a paper towel with rubbing alcohol and pat it into the open blisters. That is decidedly painful, but the alcohol helps dry up the blisters. Two or three treatments usually knocked it out, and within a week I could peel away the dead skin.
In case this is an allergic reaction, you might try some Benadryl cream on a small patch and see if it improves. I'd use the calamine lotion next, and if that fails, I'd use my method as a last resort, simply because when those opened blisters get hit with the alcohol it really stings.
Keep in mind, too, that rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol is flammable, and don't use it around an ignition source.

I nearly lost my life to a close cousin of MRSA a few years ago. You said that it was an infection — did they say it was “MRSA”? There is a big difference. You can have a bad infection and it not be MRSA. I concur with the above posters. If it is MRSA you can’t mess around with it.
I had some chigger bites on my leg that got infected. Once the infection went deep it spread like crazy. I woke up one morning and my legs were huge with fluid. It spread all over my back, chest, neck. Even maximum-strength antibiotics had little effect. I got some oil of oregano and within a few days the infection was beaten back.
Desitin diaper rash cream is known to fight MRSA, at least when it is spreading on the skin. The “Maximum Strength” thick kind is 40% zinc oxide. The itching can go away in a few minutes. Others have had some success with it, too.
But it sounds like your son is past the point where home remedies will do. We need to pray that you can get him to a doctor or ER.
In the meantime:
1. Have him stay away from ALL sugar. MRSA feeds off sugar. Someone with MRSA can eat something sweet and within minutes the itching will get worse and spread.
2. Have him get PLENTY OF SLEEP. This is so important! The human body repairs itself when we sleep. He absolutely must get a lot of sleep. Take it from personal experience! You can tell when you aren’t getting sleepy because, if you’ve had MRSA, it can come back if you get too tired.

The pharmacist said that the cream that was prescribed was for MRSA, I guess on the script, it said it was for MRSA.
I will get him in to his appointment tomorrow with his primary care doc and beg of them to refer him or have him admitted if this would be the right plan for him. I will tell him in the morning that sugar makes the pain worse and he needs to stay away from it and that he needs to try to sleep much more than he has been. It wont be easy, but I will be insistant!

That’s bad. A MRSA rash can feel like a Poison Ivy rash. Itches like crazy. Desitin will work on the itching, at least it has for mine. But if it is spreading all over he needs medical care. MRSA can go from a simple rash to life-threatening in a short time.
The biggest thing is SLEEP and NO SUGAR. He needs to be sleeping every moment he can.

I imagine Salvation is concerned if there are microbes/poison ivy/ etc. inside the shoes that putting the same shoes on will just keep aggravating things.
So another thought is make sure he changes socks often, and they get washed often, and not put into the hamper with other clothes. If it is poison ivy oils that can stay on things for a long time and keeps spreading.
Hope he is better after his appointment!
A friend of mine suggested this: “Similar situation and Dr. (Podiatrist) advised against Neosporin due to it being oil based and keeping it from being able to drain properly. Also said to use white vinegar with water to soak several times a day. He compared vinegar to some prescription med. He gave us Gentamicin Sulfate cream for after soaking. The toe nail did have to come off. Doing these things for a short time made it come off easier.”
Can’t hurt...might help. Even the white vinegar without the meds was suggested.
He is not allowed to wear socks unless he is going outside right now. They said no socks, no blankets touching his toes, no shoes unless he has the toes gauzed and medicated (of course, that was suppose to be with the cream he was denied). I also have told him that he is to put on clean socks EVERY time he has to wear them...just to be safe.
Though that is a legitimate thought as he was at camp and they often wear their socks for a few days without changing to keep from having to wash their socks half way through camp, and his shoes haven’t been washed yet, but those are almost a suede finish (that’s the texture) that he got for Christmas
