Musk ox invasion keeps Nome wildlife managers busy
Anchorage Daily News ^ | comJuly 2, 2014 | SEAN DOOGAN

Nome is used to rowdy residents, but some relatively new transplants are making a real nuisance of themselves -- although unlike the colorful characters of the early 20th century gold rush days, these visitors have four legs, not two.

Musk oxen are wandering into the city on the Seward Peninsula, and despite loud noises, water hoses and even a blow-up bear coated in ursine urine, they don't want to leave.

They're sooooo cute no matter what they play with!

Did you do fun stuff on your birthday?

I’ve spent most of the time since I got up on trying to get this computer to work properly. First, a few months ago, the mouse pad refused to lock and now the sound has gone. I’ve tried to restore it four times since I got up, and nothing.

*sigh*

I will have to go look at computers and try to get something “cheap” though this is not my idea of fun. I don’t know what will go next, but at least I have all the important stuff on the slave.

The main thing is getting a price for a new one so I can work out a budget of my already overdone budget.

Computers can be a real pain. But on the upside, it’s almost naptime!

I wasn’t even close to getting the coat closet worked on, though that may change as the day progresses. I had to go to the office and submit a report about the Attack of the Fire Extinguisher, and if I’m not mistaken, the item will be replaced before this day is over.

There was a memorial today at the office for a long-time resident from New Joisey, and I’ve never seen so many people in the community room at one time. He was a real character and was 89 when he passed. Since I don’t do funerals or memorials, I didn’t stay to enjoy the food and reminisce.

I’ll miss him at the ramada because when he was there, his mouth was going at 90 mph. And he butchered the American language! That was fun to listen to, but tiring when he just kept going. Still, he made a lot of friends and had an interesting life.

Andre just came with the correct fire extinguisher, and I told him he could have a copy of the statement I wrote. He said heads are going to roll...

Congratulations on the fire extinguisher. Looking forward to heads rolling!

I had a nap with Jake.

Don’t mean to but in, but if you don’t need a computer, tablets are pretty cheap.

Andre was obviously upset by the lackadaisical attitude of the maintenance workers, so I’m confident it will be resolved. He doesn’t like paperwork and that’s what he’s faced with, so it may be ugly for the drones.

Please DarkFAX Jake so I, too, can have a nap with him...

I was thinking of a tablet, and thanks for mentioning it. My problem is that I’m in a cocoon here, so I’m not really up on tablets.

Could you tell me what I should look for? I need storage, but since I have a 3T slave, I can always transfer most stuff. I also need to be able to watch movies so a CD tray is necessary. I’m not fond of Win8 but I know it’s inevitable. And do you have an idea of the price range?

I play games (Pogo and Shockwave) so I need capacity for that, as well, and I have many documents that need to be written. I’m an avid genealogist, so I am always inputting something about family members as well as personal histories.

And thanks for butting in! I appreciate the suggestion, and I’m sorry I tried to pick your branes. And welcome to the Undead Thread!

The Samsung Galaxy Tab3 has a USB port in the bottom.
All of your Devices: 3Tb HD , CD drive, keyboard, mouse, etc ,can be connected to a hub/or individually plugged in the bottom.
The Apple ipug has superior operating performance, however the only way in or out of the thing is via Email or iCloud server.
The Samsung is easier to operate if you can tolerate the slightly sluggish performance. It does everything well but you sometimes have to wait a moment.
The ipug is best for internet surfing ,but for doing anything else ...Samsung.
The battery life on the iPug is excellent, on the Samsung 12hours if your lucky.
Keep the laptop for printing. :)

Not an expert by any means but for just surfing the web type thing you’re.looking at less than 100.00. Not sure if you’ll find one with a built in Cd Dvd drive. Sounds more like a laptop. If you just want a Dvd player those are cheap too. I suppose you could plug an external player into a tablet but then it’ll be clunky. Iwatch movies on my Kindle fire. I also have a cheap android tablet which in some ways is much more versital than the Kindle. Tablets can get real fancy if you want to spend a bunch.

I don’t use either of my devices for any “serious work “ I am sure that there are Freepers that would be better qualified to answer that kind of question. As far as just surfing the web and watching on line movies the portability of a tablet is hard to beat.

I’m not much of a web surfer, but I will research and find out what is best. Thanks for giving me information from your point of view. It helps!

I have a Kindle and a Nook, and I can watch Netflix on the Nook, though the Kindle is more for reading, since it is older and is B&W.

I don’t think I can afford another laptop at this stage, but I really need something to keep from having withdrawal symptoms. I can use the laptop for everything but it is, one by one, losing functions.

Thanks again for your input!

I have a hub, so multi-connections are not too problematic.
I’m not sure about having a touch-pad keyboard. And can the tablet be plugged in all the time?

Since I am so limited in my financial choices, I wonder if HP is good enough or if I should research more...maybe where I can’t afford it...

Someone mentioned a deal for Kindle $10 a month for book downloads, up to 10 books at a time. I don’t know the details

The touch keyboard on the Samsung is a good large Size and easy to use (multi fingered).
The iPug board......i’m using the bluetooth replacement now.
The tablet can be plugged in all the time ,(power)although this will shorten battery life.

If you have a Computer superstore near you, go in a create a nightmare....i did. :)

In a nutshell : The Samsung works like a Laptop, it even has an SD card slot.
The iPug is ......a fantastic piece of high end jewellery that works beautifully but is useless in the real world.
