McDonald’s Has the Worst Hamburger in the Country, According to New Consumer Reports Study
New York Daily News ^ | Wednesday, July 2, 2014 | Chelsea Hirsch

The Habit Burger and In-N-Out lead the pack. Chick-fil-A also has lots to squawk about. Turns out nobody’s loving it.

The standard McDonald’s hamburger — the one that claims to satisfy “billions and billions” — finished dead last in a new Consumer Reports taste test.

The Hamburglar’s favorite meal earned a score of just 5.8 out of 10 from the magazine’s readers, putting it far behind West Coast chains The Habit Burger Grill and In-N-Out Burger, which scored 8.1 out of 10 and 8 out of 10, respectively.

The top fast food burger available locally was Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which got a 7.9 score from the 32,405 readers surveyed by the magazine.

McDonald’s said in a statement that it’s “proud to serve 27 million customers a day” — but the chain has suffered declining sales for six consecutive months. And Consumer Reports thinks it knows why.

“More and more, food quality - not just low price - is emerging as a deciding-factor for many Americans when choosing where to spend their dining dollars,” said Tod Marks, senior projects editor for the magazine.

By quality, Marks said his readers mean “the food’s flavor and fresh-tasting character.”

Even Micky D’s fans couldn’t really defend their daily bread (and frozen patty).

“The food (quality) depends on what McDonald’s location you’re at,” said Aravid Murali, an 18-year-old Brooklynite who dines with Mayor McCheese once a month.

Meanwhile, New Yorkers are waiting in line for the burger at Five Guys, despite a meal that costs several dollars more.

“I like that you can see them cooking at Five Guys as opposed to McDonald’s,” said Sean Daniels, 26, of Crown Heights.

McDonald’s did get a measure of revenge — its McGriddle breakfast sandwich beat Taco Bell’s Waffle Taco in a mouth-to-mouth test.

Still hungry for more? Breakfast and burgers weren’t the only thing on Consumer Reports’ menu. Midwest-based Portillo’s Hot Dogs was the best tasting fast-food chain with a score of 8.5 out of 10. And Chick-fil-A’s signature poultry sandwich earned a score of 8.

McD's sells on price and speed, not high quality.

I remember my first McDonald’s hamburger. It was around 1960 and one had just opened in Ft. Walton, Bch. They were 15 cents and I think the fries were the same.

I was really surprised how good they were.

My last one was around 10 years ago. I was in the midst of moving and had to just grab something for lunch. I got a cheeseburger and coke at the local one.

Absolutely awful. I can’t believe how much they have changed.

Part of mcdonalds problem is that recently, last year, they stopped using heinz ketchup after 40 years. I went to a local mcdonalds recently and I dont know what brand ketchup theyre now using, but it was inferior to heinz.

There is an old saying in the manufacturing industry. You can get it fast, cheap or of good quality. Which two do you want?

Hardees used to make one called the Huskie. They were large and delicious. There was so much juice in them that they were served in clear plastic sort of bags which kept the liquids from leaking on you.

I bet they were really unhealthy but boy they were good. This was also in the 60s.

My first job was at McDonald’s and that was when a hamburger was 13 cents. The free lunch for a full shift was 2 burgers, small fries and a small soda.

On the occasions when I’m in a hurry, need a quick bite and a McD’s is on the route, I’ll still get the same meal. But, the fries are no where near as good and the burgers are not quite the same. Anything else at McD’s? - Forget it.

Del Taco is all over the Coachella Valley....unfortunately, we only have two In-N-Out locations, one of which is too far west to apply.....the best thing about Indio:

I’m In-N-Out since 1963.

Also like Fat Burgers. If you exit El Camino Real off I-5 in San Clemente there is a burger place which used to be Fat Burgers. They kept basically the sam menu. Burger, Skinny Fries, Chocolate Shake.

My personal opinion, for the price, nothing beats the little McD’s burger. With those minced onions. Its good. I simply like that flavor. Its nutritionally balanced too.
