Michelle Burdo of CBS46 Apologizes for Saying ‘Colored Woman’
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 7/1

Posted on 07/03/2014 4:37:11 PM PDT by nickcarraway

CBS46 morning show host Michelle Burdo used the dated term “colored woman” during a segment about summer hair tips Monday morning during the 9 a.m. CBS Better Mornings Atlanta program.

“Let me tell you something,” Burdo said during a live segment to an African-American woman who appears to be the hair expert. “I’m not a colored woman but I have kinky hair just like her and when you straighten it every day, it’s…” She pauses.

The woman filled the empty air by saying, “healthier.” Here’s a 12-second portion of the segmen

On Tuesday’s show, at 9:57 a.m., Burdo apologized for her utterance. “Yesterday, I made a pretty insensitive remark during one of our segments here on Better Mornings Atlanta. I apologize… Once again, I truly want to say from the bottom of my heart that I really am sorry about that comment. I made that comment in reference to my hair color but I used an inappropriate term.” Someone posted the video on YouTube. Comments there and on Facebook include “what the hell,” “we are living in sad times” and “Her color is IGNORANT and UNINFORMED. Where did they find her…Mars?”

Camille Mahdi on Facebook was a bit more empathetic: “LOL, she probably meant to say one thing, but said what she was thinking. That’s honesty. She’s an idiot, but I am not offended in the least bit.”

Lane Michaelsen, the CBS46 news director, said in an email that he made sure she apologized on air but didn’t say if she was reprimanded in any tangible way. At least she was informed that the phrase “colored” isn’t considered politically correct in this day and age. “Women of color” is okay. “Colored woman”? Not so much.

What’s weird is if she’d said, “I’m not a woman of color”, that would have been fine to the PC police.

"Woman" and "women" should match in the chosen example below from the article. The news director needs to apologize after the other apology. /sarc.

This is what we cry about in this country.

Meanwhile, black Italian citizens of African ancestry are completely flummoxed at being called “African-American”.

Exactly. A lot of stores even have sections for hair products marked “Women of Color”

What’s the difference between a “colored woman” and a “woman of color”? It’s all about people finding reasons to be offended and forcing apologies out of others so they can feel like they’re winning some battle the rest of us aren’t even interested in fighting. All I can say is the worst thing someone can do in these situations is apologize. Once they do, that’s when everyone starts to pile on and it never stops.

"Can I say United Negro College Fund?"

Now they're calling themselves UNCF.

Not to be confused with UNICEF.

None of it matters, none of it is offensive.

None of it.

Offended people need to be told their feelings don’t matter.

Enough of this psychological abuse and domination crap.

I've never seen that. I've seen "Ethnic" at Walmart and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Is "Ethnic" also considered derogatory? I can't keep up.

Exactly. Right on the nose. And in fact, I am convinced they change it every few years specifically so they can pounce on everyone who doesn't keep up. Literally, it's a set-up. The underlying goal is to make white people afraid to talk about any of it at all because if we do, the Offended League isn't going to listen to what we say but HOW WE SAY IT. That's how they hijack the discourse, and make everyone forget the topic and focus on whether the speaker is Holy enough to have an opinion.

And the loudest accusers are often white themselves! There's nothing a liberal white loves more than lighting into other white people. It's called playing Lefter Than Thou and it's the verbal version of the Knockout game.

I figured it out.

Of course, they object to “colored woman”.
They would now object to “negro”.
Or “black”.

As soon as you find a term to describe them, they will object to it.

Because they don’t want to be pointed out. They don’t want there to be anything that identifies them.

Perhaps the news babe had just read a story on the National Association for the Advancement of Liberal Colored People, a PC accepted title, and then used the same phraseology in an unapproved, nonPC phrase. The leftist language police are very stict on this point.

Now, unless she can grovel to the satisfaction of the “Rev.” Sharpton, her career is probably on as thin ice as if she had used the word “niggardly.”

So “person of color” : good, but “colored woman” : bad?? Who are the idiots who make up these “rules” anyway?
