John Wayne and Clint Eastwood are probably the greatest western stars and are the greatest American movie heroes for many people. Vote for your favorite.
I grew up on the TV series. Included Pat Butrum, Gabby Hayes and of course Nellybell.
My first contact with a firearm of any kind, was the toy Roy Rogers two-six-gun and holster set. Circa 1953.
A few years ago my wife and I were traveling through S. California, and we passed by the Melody Ranch, Roy and Dale’s old home. Brought back a lot of memories. Roy was my favorite cowboy movie star.
Ive never forgiven Clint Eastwood for The Bridges of Madison County.
How about “Paint Your Wagon,” a western musical? Most people don’t know that Eastwood is also a musician who has done multiple film scores.
Yes, Hopalong (William Boyd) among my favorites, too. Also The Cisco Kid (Duncan Renaldo). My Dad’s cowboy idols were William S. Hart, Harry Carey, & Tom Mix.
Without reference to Google, name their horses:
William S. Hart
Tom Mix
Hopalong Cassidy
Roy Rogers
Dale Evans
The Cisco Kid
The Lone Ranger
Tonto
Jimmy Stewart
Bonus question: Name of William S. Hart’s mule?
How about Jack Perrin’s horse?
His name? Starlight.
2nd Bonus: Name of Gene Autry’s horse?
I used to watch the “cowboys” with my grandfather. The shows you mentioned. He was an immigrant from Sicily and watched mostly westerns and slapstick. However, he loved Groucho Marx.
Good! Also ridden by John Wayne, Hoot Gibson, Bob Livingston, and others. Heck, even Trigger was ridden by Olivia de Havilland! (And who just turned 98 BTW — still alive.)
I’d have to look 50% of them up.
U got me.
Jimmy Stewart’s horse?
Buck Jones had Silver.
I think someone had a horse named “Pard,” but I can’t recall who. There was also Rex, King of the Wild Horses, starring on his own in the silent days. I’ve seen several of his films. A pretty ornery cuss of a horse, though, from what I’ve read.
Ken Maynard’s horse was named Tarzan. Even had a film spotlighting him, “Come On, Tarzan” in 1932.
Your grandfather had good taste.
humor can be a funny thing. LOL
My wife grew up in the Philippines and her humor is totally different. Strange what my grandfather found funny that my American born parents did not.
Jimmy’s was a sorrel named Pie. Had a white blaze on the forehead. Played in 17 westerns with Stewart.
Good re: Buck Jones and Ken Maynard! Memory lane.
I saw most of them as a kid and don’t think I every heard the name of the horse. I may be having a senior moment.
Man From Laramie one of my fans.
Thanx.
That's a heck of a resume.

Anyone remember when Roy Rogers came out against Prop 15 to ban handguns in California back in 1982?
The press attacked him in the most vile and vicious ways, just like they attacked Charlton Heston when he became NRA President.
Good list!
