This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Sounds good! I usually stay pretty basic as far as what i plant, but some exotic veggies can be worth a try too.. Used to grow eggplant , way to much of it. I miss my kohlrabi.

I like purple potaties too. Viking fan and all.

Sounding good so far! We aren’t getting too much in the way of maters yet. I have had a few ripe ones. Hubby still has a bunch of green ones.

Hubby has been growing his tomatoes this year in 5 gallon buckets. Also his first year to try to grow roma tomatoes.
He just brought in some to show me, and they have some sort of discoloration kinda taupe colored on the stem end.

Anyone have any ideas about what it is and the cure? I told him to give it some bone meal and epsom salts, since that’s good to add at a certain point anyway.

Any help or suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

We cooled down to a perfect 75 degrees today. Kitchen got a bit heated due to the canning process, but I turned on the hood fan and opened the kitchen door and set a box fan in front of the door to draw the hot air outdoors, and now the kitchen is a nice 75 too.

“Can corn in a pot really work?”

It did for me last year.

I had rows and rows (about 250 corn plants) all in containers and I had a bumper crop. But I did Silver Queen which gets 8’+ tall and mine certainly got at least that tall and some of my rows began toppling over and I had to use my tomato stakes to get the corn stalks propped back up. This year I went with White Mirani from Park Seed which isn’t supposed to grow as tall and which also matures in less time.

And I’ve already had ripe tomatoes (Sun Gold cherries) and I have a ton more that I’ll be picking soon. Home grown tomatoes before the 4th of July in the Pacific Northwest is something of an accomplishment, I think.

Well it would be nice I guess to know that info, but we are kinda low on what you might call the “must do” scale. Just like to keep it simple and laid back and totally no rules other than good manners. However any one wanting to include their zone or state in their posts are certainly welcome to do so.

Thank you. The rain helped plus I didn't notice where critters had stolen any which is odd.

I whacked a bunch of weeds that had tassles and leaves like the corn in the planter. I don't think it is pokeweed; I should have taken a picture, couple more out there need whacked. Maybe maize, sorghum, who knows? I ordered some wildflower seeds from a place in MN and got a bunch of bad stuff with them. So beware.

I am so impressed by all the neat things you people are doing and growing. Everything looks so tidy.

If I could only grow a couple things, it would be tomatoes and peppers. Sorry the herb person got theirs bolted.

Hungry for peaches, wish I'd had room for more fruit trees and miss my Moorpark apricot tree. I'm crazy about apricots.

Thank you, greeneyes. I’ll try to get a better pic when the sun is out. Then this rose glows.

We couldn’t ask for a better 4th of July in southern Ohio today, in the mid 70’s with a slight breeze. I got a cucumber and radishes out of the garden today, plus ongoing cherry tomatoes off the patio. This week I hung an old motorcycle tire on the shed and put three Spider plants in it. The old Dunlop k181 carried me on many adventures safely.

That’s kinda like us. We would have a kinda half hearted attempt at a garden every 4 or 5 years. Then we retired, and my daughter gave me a book on sq. foot gardening.

I talked Hubby into making me a couple of raised beds and after I had a successful crop for the first time in my life, he decided he’d get back to his roots.

Each year he has created another bed, and planted more perrenial type stuff such as blueberries, blackberries, apple trees etc. Soon our whole backyard will be nothing but food stuff with some green grass in between - all in random order no landscaping plan at all.LOL

So they can sustain roots in the small pot, huh? I wish I knew this. There’s always next year.

That’s us too. Just relaxing and doing whatever strikes us. I’ll have to water later today, and we had beans that we had to process, because they interferred with exercise afternoom yesterday.

I just made it a rule that I will not process anything on exercise days. So far I am 1 week into the exercise, and already the rule has been tested twice.LOL I am sticking to it - so side tracking.

Hubby brought me in some roma tomatoes (green) to look at. On the stem ends he noticed a discoloration kinda looks like a greenish taupe color. Although one did have a somewhat different discoloration on the blossum end too.

I told him my guess would be to add some calcium, bone meal, and epsom salts to the 5 gallon containers, but that I have no idea what it is.

You’ve grown a lot of tomatoes. Does anything come to mind that it could be? Thanks.
