In Six Months, Microsoft Will Pull The Plug On Windows 7 Support
Business Insider ^ | 7-8-2014 | JULIE BORT

Posted on 07/08/2014 10:05:09 AM PDT by Citizen Zed

Microsoft will end free mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015.

That means no more security patches if hackers find holes, no more updated features or performance improvements.

This move will mostly affect consumers. Businesses that pay for extended Windows 7 support, as most of them do, will be supported for another five years, until January 14, 2020.

That's important, because many businesses are right now are in the process of upgrading their old Windows XP PCs, but they're moving to Windows 7, not Windows 8.

There's some speculation that, given the popularity of Windows 7, Microsoft might change its mind as the date nears and continue to support it a bit longer, like it did for Windows XP.

“If that’s true, it’s Linux time.”

It has been Linux time since Vista came out. Someone gave me a new Dell PC with Vista Ultimate installed. I erased that dog and installed Linux IMMEDIATELY with no 2nd thoughts and no regrets.

I liked IBM's OS/2.

It's still around.

What particular ability are you looking for?

I want to click a Start button and simply see a menu of programs like Win7 did.

On mine, if I click the little "windows looking" start icon in the bottom left, I get to the stupid ipad-type screen.

Not a big deal, but I don't see anything under navigation that allows me similar functionality to the start button in Win7.

Which distro are you using? I am considering installing on my desktop and my wife’s laptop (which is still on XP).

You might want to check out Mint 17. I like the KDE version, but there are others. I'm a long-time fedora user, and am really liking Mint a lot, which I've been running in a VM as my work PC.

I run Linux on a variety of machines. Always some recent version of Linux Mint or Ubuntu. I really like Mint 16 running the “Mate” desktop - very stable and friendly. I’ll wait a while on the latest Mint 17 release for the all the bugs to shake out.

I could more-likely pull off a triple lindy than do such things.

its bad etiquette or netiquette to be sending generalized statements to complete strangers.

You shouldnt be protesting etiquette.

Threads like these make me feel like a computer genius, I used XP until they stopped supporting it, now I have 8.1, it took me a couple of days to Google the tweaks I wanted, such as booting straight to desktop and such, and now everything is hunky dory, I set it on automatic updates, and enjoy the computer.

Try Ubuntu, it is plug-and-play and has a great app library you can search and download.

Looks like a Mac will be my next purchase. Can MS designed desktops be purged of it and use an open source OS like LINUX?

Where do you get it and how would you go about replacing MS 7?
