Thank you for the report. I am short on ambition this year and I’m starting to wonder what the problem is. It’s been a productive year in the garden and everything is a little earlier and more robust.

Can you use T Squash in this as well, or for that matter, other kinds of squash? Thanx!

I confess I’m a little short in the ambition dept this year as well. I look at it as I was initially approaching gardening as a sprint... and I’m glad I did, because I had a very steep learning curve to achieve! (And I STILL DO!! LOL!)

But this year, I decided to be more like a marathoner, and reserve some of my “kick” and take some baby steps and just be glad with a small garden and only a few new experiments, and the continuation of a few things that gave me pleasure in previous tries. Sometimes we need to pace ourselves so we don’t get burned out, if we have the luxury to do so.

I rejoice to hear that you were able to have a responsive garden this year! The garden sprites are rewarding you for your persistence and the application of the knowledge you have gained!

The weather here has been amazing also, and that has helped me to at least keep at it. If it had been as broiling hot as the past few summers, I might have scaled down even more!

I haven’t made it yet, but looking at the directions, I would think T’s for sure would work. The necks have that nice, firm flesh with no seeds and the flavor/taste is so very mild that it should cook/blend nicely with the other ingredients. I would think butternut might work for most of the same reasons (firm, seedless flesh) ... more of a flavor, but I happen to love it. The color might be a nice addition to the pie. One of the comments in the recipe for the Cucuzza Pie was that it didn’t have a lot of color.

Yes, exactly like that. These are container tomatoes I’m growing this year, but last year we had the same problem with grown-in-the-ground tomatoes.

One of the comments in the recipe for the Cucuzza Pie was that it didn’t have a lot of color.

I wondered on that recipe about replacing the vanilla pudding with another flavor to give it some color..butterscotch, pumpkin, banana cream..I don't know what other flavors might work...hmm, chocolate, then leave out the cloves?

I harvested 2 cucuzzi this am, so maybe I should experiment...I have some spaghetti sauce with a T squash cooking right now. One T squash, diced took up my whole 12" skillet.

The first time I was there, I saw a slot machine close to me paying off some amount of money close to two times out of three tries. The next time I went there, I used that machine, betting the maximum every time and won $500, so I have stayed with that one machine since then and have come away several hundred dollars to the good every time. Some machines are set to pay off in order to keep the customers seeing people win money. The trick is finding such a machine and the one I use is one of those.

Thx for checking in here on the Gardening Thread.

The trick is finding such a machine and the one I use is one of those.

Gambling (except gambling whether I can get some plant to grow) holds no sway for me. I did notice in Las Vegas that Asian themed slots, slots near the ATM's where folks cash out, and slots on the way to restrooms, or near exits seemed to be paying out.

I’ve always found it relaxing - bet the maximum, punch the button and see what happens, no brain activity required, just push the button.

I think I’m going to get an updated phone next week which includes a tablet along with the phone. We may go to Ohio and New York state next month in the bus/house, and I can use the tablet to stay connected to FR and leave my computer at home.

THanks! I am glad to know that it would work. I’ve never tried (or even heard of) cucuzza squash. With my track record, that could make a 5th kind of squash that I can’t grow! LOL

Checking in!

I talked about making a black raspberry pie using the raspberries in the back yard, and I made sure dad heard me talk. He swears he didn’t spray anything in the back yard, and he didn’t change his tune when I said the pie would be for Mom’s birthday party, so I think those berries are safe. They are now on the list of “things dad will be eating too”. I’ve picked 2.5 quarts from a tiny 3x5 patch. And there are more waiting to ripen!

Still gathering supplies to build a camper on the back of my truck. I saw a slide-in that I could afford, but when I clicked on the pictures it was nothing but a wooden box. No bed, no toilet, not even a window. Just a bare, empty, uninsulated box. I can build better than that. I’ll have to, if this winter is anything like the last one!

I tried making the yarrow bug repelent, but I think I did it wrong, because it looked and smelled like water, and the bugs ignored it. On the other hand, I have verified that I can distill water using my pressure canner and a hose. That might be usefull someday.

Peas are starting to dry down, and I have little green tomatoes on one of my tomato plants! The other 7 tomato plants are a bit behind, this one was the only one out of the first planting that made it, so it’s had a good 8-week head start on the others.

I stopped at a garage sale and got 2 oil lamps (the “genie in a lamp” kind, not the glass chimney kind), some incense burners (seller threw them in with the lamps, since it was a matching set), and about a mile of fishing line, all for $2. The seller had a crate load of foothold traps, and I seriously thought about getting some, but my shoulder won’t let me set the traps I’ve got. Foothold traps are tricky, too. If done wrong, you end up with a 3-footed critter running loose. I can’t do that to an animal, I may kill and eat them but I won’t torture them.

If the pie recipe turns out, I’ll post it later. I couldn’t find the exact recipe I wanted, so I sort of meshed 3 different recipes together.

My flour mill arrived this week, but I haven’t had a chance to test it yet. I’m looking forward to finding out what my home-grown cornmeal tastes like :)

Good weekend in the garden overall. Zukes and beans out the wazoo, giving them away in bulk. Dinner tonight is grilled steak, mashed turnips, garden taters with dill and beans with garlic and basil, along with some good fresh mushrooms that I did not grow. Tomatoes are a bit slow but coming along, bell peppers are feeble, frying peppers are doing great, hot peppers are slow other than pablanos, winter squash looks to be a bumper crop, corn is a mixed bag, beets next week.

Sounds delicious..way better than my Spaghetti Sauce I made with Tromboncinos.

Picked my first cuke and a few tomatoes last week. Getting quite a bit of eggplant. Sweet corn should be just about ready. Pepper plants are loaded. Cauliflowers are massive.

Went to Indiana to catch the first two nights of USAC sprint week so I got nothing done in the garden over the weekend.
It was pouring down rain when I got home yesterday afternoon so I didn’t even go out to look at it.

I’ll get out there tonight. I bet there’s something yummy that’s ready to be picked.
