United Airlines flight diverted to remote Pacific island of Midway

A United Airlines flight carrying 348 people from Honolulu to Guam was diverted to the tiny Pacific island of Midway because of a “mechanical issue,” the airline said Saturday.

An electrical odor filled the Boeing 777 aircraft and the airline was reviewing the mechanical problem that caused the diversion that occurred Thursday night local time.

Midway Island — a remote, 2.4-square-mile atoll — is located about 1,300 miles northwest of Hawaii and was the site of an important U.S. military base during World War II. It is now home to a national wildlife refuge and has roughly 60 residents.

Huh. That was that thing with Hitler wasn’t it?

Midway was the site of a famous battle in WW2. Yamamoto lost.

Someone must have pulled the finger of the guy who just happened to be on this flight.

When did we leave Midway? I was on a plane that landed there in 1973. We also landed at Wake Island. Both of them were nail biters.

Did both of those ,Johnson islands was the worst I ever had pilot almost overshot .had the seat belt marks for almost a week after that landing. It was like landing on an aircraft carrier.

I flew into Midway and Wake also. I was impressed that there were the carcasses of WWII ships beached on Wake and we were at Midway just long enough to refuel. This was 1959-1963.

I was on a C 130 that stopped for the night on Wake Island about 15 years ago. There were not any active duty military personnel stationed there. Although the military runs the Island everyone there was a civilian. Lots of Thais.

From what I was told by the locals the military only comes to Wake for exercises or for missile tests and such.

Breath takingly beautiful there.

Thanks for that photo - I love old ones, and old air photos even more. Yes I know - Midway was one of the big turning points in the war in the Pacific.

I just got a kick out of the explanation in the article. Although I suppose for some it might be the first time they heard of it. Perhaps even the young-buck reporter that did a google search on Midway!

I love stopping off in Guam, the bar in the airport has a bunch of memorabilia of when the Pan Am clippers would stop there. Plus landing on islands is cool..

We landed at Wake on a C5A Galaxy. I saw water thinking we going into the drink. Then all of a sudden the runway appeared. When we were taking off I swear the wings were flapping as the big bird sped down the runway. Then the pilot stomped the brakes. I KNEW we were going in that time. But he got it stopped. A light had indicated a door was open.

We island hopped all the way across the Pacific. We also landed at Guam. We skipped Okinawa. Ah, those were the days.

Must have been serious to have to land at a strip that appears to not having been maintained in years.

I was on a tin can, sailed from Pearl Harbor, we had to stop at Midway to top off fuel bunkers prior to sailing for Japan. Midway sucked as a liberty port.

It sucked as a stopover.

My old man served on a tin can in WW2. Parked my Mom in Frisco while he was off killing Japs.

I was born there in 1945.

It was a good country back then
