A man attempting to sail his 36-foot sailboat through the Northwest Passage was rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Saturday after his boat became trapped in Arctic sea ice northeast of Barrow.
The Coast Guard cutter Healy broke a 12-mile path through ice to reach the sailboat Altan Girl about 40 miles from Barrow, the Coast Guard said in a news release Sunday. The Healy was diverted from a research mission to respond to the sailboat.
The Coast Guard did not release the rescued mans name, but the Nome Nuggets June 26 Dock Walk column described the Altan Girl as a Canadian-Turkish sailing vessel."

Vessel captain is unidentified at this point. I'm betting he leans port.

Yup! Probably a “warmer” who found out that his data was a bit off, haa! I hope he has to give up his boat to pay for his rescue but probably feels he is due the rescue.

It’s weird how many people trying to do this ALWAYS get stuck in the ice. They might want to purchase a globe before they sail off. Oh yeah. Don’t read any articles written by Algore and his loony envirowackos.

40 miles from Barrow means that he didn’t get very far before becoming ice-locked.

after his boat became trapped in Arctic sea ice northeast of Barrow. Stuck in ice in July. More proof of global warming.

Not far at all.
He was attempting to sail from Vancouver to the Canadian east coast via the Arctic Circle. At least the Coast Guard rescue was straightforward, after they ice broke a 12 mile path.

A beer cooler must have fallen off of some Eskimo's fishing
boat. Everyone knows there is no ice in the Arctic anymore.

It is true that up until last summer a lot of the Arctic Ocean was free of ice to some degree in the warm months. How clear from ice I don’t know.
But this guy should have decided his sailing route and time of the year based on the current conditions of the last year and this summer. The Arctic has been more ice packed in the summer recently.
A GW doofus, I think.

You are right about that. 40 miles from Barrow is about 2000 miles from Nova Scotia.

Richard Head would be a good name for him ;)

It must be an epiphany to wake up 12 miles deep in pack ice - an “oh, shiite” moment.
OTOH, he's probably thinking he should have started out on the Greenland side. Duh.

He probably went broke stocking up on provisions in Barrow - I was there in the 90’s and a gallon of milk was $11.00.
