He was diagnosed with cancer three years ago and had continued to work, his family said. He died on Friday.
Lonnen played the lead in Harry's Game as an undercover British soldier, sent to Northern Ireland to infiltrate the IRA and kill an assassin.
He was also in The Sandbaggers, Doctor Who, Rich Tea And Sympathy and Crossroads.
The actor also voiced children's animation series Budgie The Little Helicopter.

Meanwhile, Gerald Seymour, the guy who wrote Harry’s Game, is still alive.
I caught the Gerald Seymour bug very early on with ‘Harry’s Game’. A very decent novel that was adapted into a very solid mini-series that ran stayed true to Seymour’s written words at least once in the U.S. via PBS long ago.
Lonnen was exceptional in the lead role. And held up his end opposite Roy Marsden in ‘The Sandbaggers’.
Never understood why ‘Harry’s Game’ never came out on DVD or Blu-Ray.
Would love to see an adaptation of Seymour’s ‘The Journeyman Tailor’ and ‘The Fighting Man’.
More’s the pity!
RIP.
