Having been to Ireland many times I must say that I cannot blame the pub. I have seen so many Americans (most I must confess) go into pubs and behave like true As*ho**s - behavior that would get them thrown out of most pubs in the U.S..

Of course you were treated well. You were spending money in their establishments. It doesn’t disprove my point however. Many Europeans do have an irrational hatred of America and Americans.

That was not my experience. Every time I told someone I was American I was greeted with a big smile.

Thats not been my experience. I keep hearing about it, but I never saw evidence of “hatred for Americans” after several weeks in Europe. Quite the opposite in fact.

I suppose you’re right. Just a visceral reaction to someone singling out Americans while ignoring the adjective “loud”. I’ve been embarrassed enough times by compatriots who should have been refused passports or barred from their flights to have known better.

How many European languages do you speak besides English?

I used to work for the U.S. unit of a European company. What I was told to my face and overheard went far beyond mere disagreements over business strategy and tactics. I think European anti-Americanism comes from two major sources: former communists or people who were raised on a diet of anti-American and pro-Soviet propaganda, and old style Tories, Gaullists or their equivalents in other countries who can’t get over the fact that the U.S. is now the dominant nation in the world. And now add in the muslims. The Lightworker seems to have made things worse.

The wife and I loved Ireland, especially the Ring of Kerry. The people couldn’t have been more welcoming.

Here’s my experience. They may dislike “Americans”, collectively, but people are people. If you’re polite, and friendly, individuals get along fine.

We’re not too crazy about “Iranians”. Ever met and talked to someone from Iran. I have. Great people, friendly, lots of fun. Its the exact same thing.
