A high percentage of Europeans dislike Americans and always have. It doesn’t have anything to do with Iraq, Afghanistan or anything else the U.S. does. They simply dislike Americans and everything we stand for.

Well, I’m glad to hear that Ireland’s economy is so great that they no longer need US tourist $$. Good for them - now we can visit other countries or places where we are welcome.

His house, his rules...and his consequences. I recall a winery near Silicon Valley I visited where the owner put out a fresh “no jeans, no t-shirts, no yuppies” sign. I watched as at least a half dozen people saw it, shrugged, and got back into their cars, including one I’d met at a previous winery. He was a buyer for a restaurant chain.

Or, perhaps, Americans act like entitled pricks when they enter his pub. Some Americans aren’t exactly good emissaries. I just got back from Europe and made an extra effort to tip well and be polite. I always got great service and everyone was very friendly and helpful.

He’s entitled to refuse service to anyone. I don’t have a problem with his sign. Don’t eat or drink there. It’s his loss in the long run.

When I look at the hand-lettered sign, it strikes me that it’s kind of shaky — like an elderly person’s handwriting. Maybe the person who owns it doesn’t want those tour buses pulling in and filling up his place and placing too much demand on his staff. Maybe he just wants a quiet little pub filled with locals. And maybe his experience with American tourists is that they are loud. I haven’t travelled in so long — I don’t know how people behave on a vacation overseas.

I guess we Americans have out-yelled the German’s as the most bothersome. Well, I guess we can go elsewhere. What is the Flanders region of Belgium like at this time of year? I was in Oostand many years ago, while in the Navy. Oh, nevermind. I just read Belgium has now been revealed as a global drugs gateway and the cocaine capital of Europe! Well, they still have those great hot pretzels you can eat with ice cream, I hope.

Pretty simple rule: don’t be a “loud” American. I can live with that.

You have good insight. I hadn’t thought about it perhaps being owned by someone who was old and just didn’t want to be overwhelmed.

That’s the great thing about how American used to be in the old days. Now, imagine the uproar if he inserted a different group for “yuppies”...you know who I’m talking about.

I want to head back to Korea. It’s been 32 years since I left the last time and I hear it’s nicer than here now.

Been overseas many times and many times been embarrassed by the behavior of some Americans. I’m willing to give this business owner the benefit of the doubt since the sign does specify “loud”. He may regret specifying “Americans”. Now the whole village will probably end up losing American tourist business.

In my experience at European eateries, museums, churches, etc. German tourists tend to be even louder than Americans. And Ireland is one place in Europe where Americans tend to be especially welcome. But as someone already pointed out, his business and his rules. Beyond that the owner can just go F himself.

"The cafe lists the undesirables it would prefer not to receive in its establishment, including bus and coach tours and rowdy tourists from across the Pond."

I wish Jim would put up such a notice on FR! ;-)
