About 5 years ago, when medical transcription was still a viable occupation, I transcribed a hospital report on an illegal woman who had spent several weeks at our facility being treated for drug-resistant TB. She finally checked herself AMA but not before racking up a bill of about $300,000. Since she was an indigent illegal, the taxpayers of Arizona and the US paid for her treatment. She had been treated for this several times before and always left against medical advice and refused to take her prescribed medications upon release. This, I’m afraid, is the future.
