Deadly dog mauling: Livonia man dies after two mastiffs attacked him as he jogged ( MI )

METAMORA TWP, MI – A Livonia man died after he was attacked by two large dogs while he was out for an evening run Wednesday evening, July 23, .. Metamora Township Police Chief David Mallett.

...

Mallett said the dogs responsible for the attack are two 3-year-old Cane Corsos. A Cane Corso is described by the American Kennel Club as a "mastiff type" dog that ranges in size from 23 1/2 to 27 1/2 inches tall at the shoulder.

...

Mallett said there was a report of a dog bite in May 2012 where the animal did come back to the same address. Another report was taken in November 2013 after a man between 60 and 70 years old was bitten and taken to the hospital. Mallett said in both cases the animals came back to the same address

...

Geoffrey Petz, 33, of Metamora, said he has had dealings with dogs in the area on several occasions. His late grandmother's house is next door to the home where the dogs allegedly live and he said he has seen them loose before.

"They get loose kind of regularly," Petz said. "I've had interactions where I was walking out of my grandma's pole barn and there was a dog standing there with its hair standing up, growling at you. When you get that feeling, you can see it in an animal if it's scared or aggressive and you just back right back into the door ... I've only had interactions with the dogs one at a time, thank God. If they were in a pack of two or three, I don't know what would happen

Irresponsible dog owner should be charged with negligent homicide at the least seeing as there were two previous biting incidents.

Once a dog has bitten a person in an unprovoked attack that dog should be put down as a proven danger to all.

Of course I also think the same about humans who murder.

No repeat offenders.

I sincerely hope the relatives of the dead man sue the dogs’ owner and win .

Running and dogs often are a bad combination.

Metamora and Livonia are over an HOUR apart from each other.

Something’s goofy here...

One added point. There is a general list of about 10 different breeds of dogs that insurance companies look long and hard at, Mastiffs are among those breeds. If this guy had home owner’s insurance and this company knew about the dog, they are going to have to pay out whatever maximum that policy holds, plus the owner may be civilly liable for much more after any possible court action, not to mention posible criminal negligence.

Yep, I concur. Cane Corsos are high intensity guard dogs. There’s no excuse on the owners part for letting the dogs run loose. He knew what he had. Also unless he lived on a farm, it’s illegal to let dogs run loose.

Of course if the police had responded to this incident some here would have wanted them to reason with the dogs rather than take definitive action to prevent injury to humans.

I’ve had dogs come after me while jogging. I now jog on the city streets of D.C. (I work not far from the Washington Monument and Smithsonian buildings) during my lunch hour. Not ideal, but safer. All I have to worry about avoiding are tourists.

Professional breeders have been very careful with the breeding of these large animals, so that aggressiveness and jealousy are kept to a minimum. Hopefully, this is an anomaly. OTOH, dogs will behave differently when in groups.

The Cane Corso is of Italain Mastiff relation and is, indeed, the dog Roman soldiers used to literally scare the dookie out of their enemies. Not a terrier in any way shape or form even though they look like roided out Pit Bulls.
