In today’s terms, John was more libertarian / pacifist than lefty. He had a big falling out with Jerry Rubin (or was it Abby Hoffman?) and was embarrassed by some of his associations. He couldn’t stand Allan Ginsburg.

At the time, his behavior shocked us. And back then, Viet Nam was the litmus test for left/right. Today, it’s more complicated.
