WICHITA, KS (KCTV) - Lady has had a tough life in recent months, but a Florida heiress who loves animals is vowing to make the lab's golden years truly happy.

Lab gets fairytale ending after 2 families reject dog Lady is getting use to her new home in Florida after a wealthy heiress rescued her from a Kansas shelter. Lady's story is worthy of a Hollywood movie. The grizzled black lab made national headlines when she walked 30 miles to return home to owners who had given her up and refused to take her back.

As word spread on social media, heartbroken dog fans swamped the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter telephone line as they sought to adopt the older dog.

After learning of her plight, Wrigley Gum heiress Helen Rich Rosburg flew a private jet to Kansas on Thursday to whisk the dog to her Florida sanctuary for neglected animals.

Effing people are the worst. They don’t deserve that beautiful dog.

Hope it has a great life with its new owner.

Poor ole pup. I am glad he was rescued. Some people aren’t worth walking two feet for.

Well those people just plain suck. A big Thank You to whomever gave her a new home.

Glad the “heiress” took Lady in. We have taken our share of older dogs dumped by callous people.

We’ve had over forty dogs since we’ve been married (36 years). Mostly they last a couple of years as they are generally quite old, and require some veterinary attention, but they need homes just like the pups. It’s a heartache due their age, but worth it as the older dogs are generally very loving animals with a history, and just want a home.

Haven’t ever had a regretful situation with one yet. Hope never will.

At least there was a happy ending for her.

I had my own “happy ending” animal story today. I sometimes feed the squirrels in the local park, and a few months ago there was one with a badly injured hind leg that was hobbling around. He had a wound on the leg, it seemed to be broken, and he had licked all the fur off it from the knee down. Still managed to get in and out of trees on his three legs, but on the ground, he could barely sit with out wobbling.

I tried to go more frequently and look for him specifically to feed, since he obviously couldn’t forage much in his condition. After about a week though, I stopped seeing him and figured that he must have died.

Well, today I stopped by and was doing my usual routine when I spotted a scraggly, skinny, pathetic looking squirrel, missing most of the fur on his tail, hanging around the tree that the injured one used to live in. Sure enough, when I got closer I noticed he was limping on his hind leg, but could walk on it and get around. The little guy survived!

He’s skinny but getting around a lot better. I’m going to make some extra trips and hopefully I can get him fattened up before wintertime.

It breaks your heart to hear that she walked all that way and was rejected, but one has to think about this, hold the emotion for a minute. How did it happen that an elderly dog was free to walk away on her own? What was the arrangement? Was she released to a private owner or Humane Society? If so, somebody was not watching her, and she could have by hit by a car at her age. Everbody is raining hate on the previous owner who ‘wouldn’t take her back’, but maintaining a dog of that age and in declining health is a big financial responsibility. Perhaps the owner had a change of lifestyle, and knew she would not have enough time to give this dog to keep her happy. People should be thankful the previous owner allowed this dog to continue her life, however curtailed it may be at this point. I’m thrilled that someone with both the will and the means to support her quickly came forward. Like the Purina commercials used to say, with some dogs; ‘All you add is Love”.
