>>> .... letter from university President Eric W. Kaler to U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.)

Is it true university presidents have ‘real work’ that they are paid to do?

Good point about the Giants.

You could take just about any team nickname, and find something offensive about it. And people with too much time on their hands, and too much liberal theology in their minds, will eventually try to get other teams to change names. It won’t stop with Indian nicknames.

Everybody should LOVE the Chicago Cubs, then. How can anybody think the lovable cubs offensive?

Sadly there are no NFL football teams named The Cretins...or The Savages. to even things out a bit...

The name The RAIDERS comes close...but no cigar.

“New York Giants is offensive. It is discriminatory against smaller people.”

*****

Would that be “vertically challenged people” or “people of different vertical abilities?”

Don’t want to be accused of heightism when discussing munchkins, midgets, dwarves, leprechauns, Robert Reich, and the like.

I expect the PETA folks will eventually want to get rid of animal team nicknames.

If we accept the premise that nicknames are offensive, that the Indian nicknames are offensive to Indians, then it stands to reason that animal nicknames are offensive to the animals.

So, in this case, if we are to be good liberals, and have intellectual honesty in this matter, we also need to protest any animal nicknames as offensive to the animal in question.

Maybe the university should clean up it’s own messy nest first.

Minnesota was tabbed the “Gopher State” in 1857 after a satirizing cartoon, depicting nine Gophers with the heads of local politicians pulling a locomotive, was published. The story was over legislative action for a $5 million railroad proposal in western Minnesota. Later, the university picked up the nickname.

The Vikings and Raiders play tonight. Oh, the humanity. Violence represented and honored. How insensitive.

I remember a time when a whole stadium full of REAL Americans would have stood up in unison and SHOUTED that name out, just because someone told them they couldn’t say it - accompanied by a few thousand middle fingers.

Any name or word, for that matter.

Sick of this PC bullsh*t.

There probably IS at least one Fringe Group actively working to get the Giants to change their name To The New York Dwarves...

Then fast forward 10 years, and they’ll want to change the “Washington” part, because George Washington was a slave owner.

Football team names, man…I’m tired of Panthers and Tigers and Wildcats. I would like to root for the Cincinnati Mice, man. “Go, Mice! Let’s win for the pink and white!” Well you’d have a whole rodent division, man. You’d have the Hawaii Hamsters, the Georgia Gerbils. Guys would be All-Rodent. Ya dig it, y’know. The Oakland Raiders, man. What about the victims? The Virginia Victims. I’d like to see any animal that’s alive ought to be eligible to be for a team, man.…The Texas Tumors, man. How about the Kansas City Crabs? “Well, the Crabs were all over the Cowboys today, Bill, uh…yes indeed.”

— George Carlin, “For Name’s Sake”
We get to this point yet?

Yes, they will seek to change the Washington name. It could happen.

In New Orleans, the school board changed the name of George Washington school. The board deleted the Washington name because George Washington owned slaves. They wanted to make a political statement. They renamed the school after some African king. Which presumeably helped the self esteem of the mostly black students who attend the school.

No word on whether academic achievement increased at the former George Washington school after the name change. No word on whether the mostly black students gained greater appreciation for their “roots” by attending a school named after an African historic figure.

So who wins that game according to Limbaugh's Environmentalist Wacko Method?

I recall UMass tried to get rid of the “Minutemen” as their team name.

Students probably think Minuteman refers to sexual prowess.
