A red 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta, which was once involved in a fatal accident, has set the world record for a car sold at auction, going for $38.1 million at a sale in California, auction house Bonhams said.

The price offered on Thursday by a bidder whose identity was not disclosed surpassed the $30 million (all figures U.S.) paid last year for a 1954 Mercedes Benz W196 race car, also sold by Bonhams, the auctioneers said in a press release.

“We’ve always maintained that we would exceed the current world record and that the car would bring between $30-$40-million and today the GTO did just that,” Robert Brooks, chairman of Bonhams, said in a statement.

Same here. If I had the bucks I'd like to have one of the really good Cobra replicas. All the fun without the irreplaceability. Kind of a have your cake and eat it too thing.

The new owner. But seriously, that’s the traditional name for a sedan, especially in Europe.

My favorite Ferrari. Had the Aurora HO Thunder-Jet model of this car when I was a kid.

That looks like a diesel I’m guessing with the heater plug dangling off the front.

The 1967 Ferrari P3/4 and P4 was a much better looking car. And a good one. It was Enzo Ferrari’s answer to the Ford GT-40.

" It was Enzo Ferrari’s answer to the Ford GT-40."

I always wanted a GT40 with the head clearance bump. Bad to use for a commute to the East in the morning and to the West in the evening though.

Major difference is the GTO could conceivably have been used on public roads as a somewhat streetable car. The 330 was pure track car.

I watched a couple GTOs raced at the old Riverside track in the early 60's and was dissappointed in the apparent lack of acceleration and sound. Expected much more. They were like someone's personal car out in the midst of race cars.

Sure, they're all fun and tire smoke--until it's time for a new clutch--it's a Ferrari 450.

I have NO idea how much...
