Linda Stasi: Robin Williams’ $30M alimony to ex-wives contributed to death [What did he owe them?]
New York Daily News ^ | 08/21/2014 | Linda Stasi

Did alimony kill Robin Williams?

At least in part it sure did. Paying out over $30 million to ex-wives who were allowed to attach themselves to Williams’ bank account like comatose patients on feeding tubes would be enough to make Gandhi angry and depressed.

While states are finally, gradually catching up to the modern age in terms of alimony (now they call it “maintenance” — as in “high maintenance”) the practice of men paying women because they once were married is not just primitive but, yes, sexist.

Yeah, go ahead, call me anti-feminist, call me whatever you want, but the truth is alimony (which is different from child support and fair distribution of assets acquired during the marriage) doesn’t mean the non-working spouse is entitled to live as high as the Kardashians. It’s that concept that is fundamentally anti-feminist.

No, I’m not talking out of my head. I’m talking as a formerly divorced, unemployed woman who didn’t ask for alimony, just a fair amount of child support for our then-2-year-old daughter, which never happened anyway.

His support of the troops is admirable and should be honored. My position is that even something this noble doesn’t give you universal carte-blanche to be wrong on everything else.

Well you said his death 'couldn't happen to a nicer guy' which seemed over the top for someone like Williams. His loss is being mourned by the Military as well.

Each of William’s x’s had to live 24/7 with a coke fiend. They earned it and he was more than happy to pay anything to be left alone, until he realized he would need another wife to go through it all over again.

are you one of them? you sound like you have intimate knowledge of the situation

When I was going through my divorce, my sister sent me a card that said on the front, "In every divorce, there are always two sides to the story. Yours, and"

On the inside of the card it continued; "...the asshole's!"

Read in context; my statement referred to his marital woes, which he brought on himself, not his suicide since the connection between the two is still speculative.

Nonetheless, you may be right in saying it was over the top.

I understand that from the context.

But once you have divorced, you are divorced. There is no un-divorced.

Once again, people are inventing words or phrases to make themselves feel better.

I am not against divorce. I understand that it is a horrible experience. But when I speak to my divorced friends about their divorces, I try to learn what they learned from the experience.

None of them consider themselves “cured” from the status.

I totally agree with her and I’m female. I think guys get royally screwed in the courts over alimony AND child support.

As Charlie sheen correctly pointed out, you don’t pay bookers because they come over you pay them because they’ll leave.

Ha-Ha! I live rent free in your head!

Nearly finished, Darling! Just tucking the last layer of finely ground glass between the bacon, lettuce & tomato, then topping it all with cyanide-infused mayo.

Sweet Tea on the side OK? ;)

I spent one month living with two cocaine addicts that were married to each other. One of them a relative of mine. That marriage didn't last either.

That’s what we thought too, Laz.

We begged him NOT to marry those b*** busters, one of whom’s father was a high -powered attorney out of Atlanta.

I once heard a showbiz type (can’t recall who)...one who had been divorced a couple of times...be asked if he planned to marry again. He said something like “I’d be better off just finding a woman I hate and buy her a house”.

Agree.

Yes, an older woman who sacrificed a career for decades making a home for her husband deserves support. And if he is wealthy, she deserves pretty nice support. No problem there.

But $30 million a year, and nobody’s elderly???? That is ridiculous. Anyone can live on a million a year. Many of us would love that opportunity.

The point of alimony is not to leave a woman with zero job experience or prep helpless and alone because her wealthy husband left her for the younger secretary.

I did not ask for alimony when I divorced; I waived it on the forms.

If he stayed with wife 1 instead of taking up with the nanny there would be no alimony.

Yeah, I was number two, thinking I would be the good one, just like my parents were good number twos. She is at number 4 now... And I decidedly will never remarry.

Sounds like the Ferguson riots... The cops go after protesters opposing them but let the looters loot businesses....
