Michael Sam unclaimed after being cut by Rams (now a "free agent")

A day after Michael Sam was released by the St. Louis Rams, he remained unclaimed by any other NFL team.

Under the league’s waiver process, any team could have claimed him for its 53-player final roster, but none has done so. That means that Sam, the 249th pick in the seventh round of the NFL draft, is now free to sign on as a practice-squad player with any team, although the Rams would seem to be the most likely to add him to the 10-player practice squad. Even if he does sign with the Rams, it’ll be tough for him to get onto the field, though, given the team’s depth on the defensive line. Still, Sam, trying to be the first openly gay player on an NFL regular-season roster, made a favorable impression on the Rams.

I was just skimming through channels and the NFL network just analyzed why Sam was cut and the guy pointed out all of this, especially that he couldn’t or wouldn’t play special teams and couldn’t play any other position on defense and therefore wasn’t a versatile player anyway. All that hype and angst over a mediocre, one-dimensional “athlete.”

There’s a reason the Packers wear Green And Yellow.

I went to the ESPN site last night looking for some video, and the first five or six of them were about Michael Sam.

Unbelievable.

He ought to send an audition tape to the just-launched SEC network. Michael Sam is no NFL player, but he’s more articulate than most of the ex-jocks already hired for that network.

Short answer: no. Sam’s “coming out” was timed exactly for impact in the NFL draft. By his own admission, he knew he was gay years before. And his sexual preference wasn’t exactly a secret back in Texas, where he grew up and played high school ball.

By coming out when he did, Sam focused a lot of attention on himself—far more that would normally be afforded a low-round, marginal NFL prospect. He practically forced an NFL team to use a draft pick on him and keep him around longer than you’d reasonably expect.

As others have noted, the Rams already had a lot of depth on the DL—why waste a pick on a guy who’s too short to play DE in the NFL, too small to be a DT and too slow to be an outside line backer. And the Rams have known for several weeks that Sam wasn’t effective enough on special teams to make the final roster. Instead, they generated some favorable publicity by drafting the first openly gay player and keeping him around for the duration of training camp.

Sam’s carefully-timed strategy almost worked. If he had been better on kickoff coverage or the punting team, he might have made the roster.

The fact that he was SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, said more about how bad SEC defenses were last year, than how good Sam was.

Actually it wasn't how bad the SEC defenses were last year, it was how good the talent on the Mizzou defense was. You had Kony Ealy on the other side of the line and an great crew of linebackers. When the other team's offense is trying to stop them it was easier for Sam to get to the QB.

The Packers' name comes from the Indian Packing Company, which was later bought by the Acme Packing Company in IL.

Very well said.

If it weren’t for that...this would be a non-story. Most wouldn’t even know who the guy is.
