just a tip, measure twice, cut once.

Daggone it, I've cut that rope three times and it's still too short!

Differential calculus is just a notation of what you've actually done here. The power is in the manipulation of the notation, instead of using actual numerology in the exhausting recopying of numbers over and over to produce the same result. Using just the mind, one can perform the manipulations and come out with the result that the answer is that it will require 2 x the value of the number of diameters that comprise the length of the circumference of an exact circle.

It is exactly the power of calculus methods that makes exact computations so much easier than plodding add/subtract/multiply/divide in the grade-school paradigm. It helps if, through use, one has the numerical value of pi memorized.

But thanks. I didn't need your calculation. I knew immediately that from principle the amount needed was 2 x pi in feet. I converted the decimals (by resorting to a calculator) to inches. The mechanical doing of that was not necessary to get the concept. And the use of numbers based on calculus was achievable without pencil and paper.

If the diameter of the earth is 8,000 miles then it requires 132.633,600 feet of rope to encircle the earth.

The point is that wouldn't matter if the diameter of the earth was 2 feet or 100,00 miles. The numerical answer to your problem would be the same. You understand?

You understand?

Of course I understand!

That is why I posed the problem.

Would you like another?
