Solution to Seat Rage: No More Reclining
Daily Beast ^ | September 4, 2014 | Will Doig

It’s a sign of our air-rage times: three separate planes forced to divert in the space of two weeks when cramped passengers went ballistic over someone reclining their seat. In one episode, two undercover air marshals subdued and handcuffed the irate traveler in question. In another, a woman swore at the reclining passenger in front of her and screamed for the pilot to “put this plane down.”

The dust-ups don’t shock Robert Mann, a former airline executive who now runs an airline-industry analysis company. “August is the highest load-factor month of the year for a North American carrier, and it’s not surprising to me that the highest frequency of incidents between passengers occur in that month,” he says. “It’s like rats in a maze. At a certain point they start eating each other.”

A consolidation prize for being short is not feeling crunched when flying.

The airlines created this. The airlines should solve it.

Put more space between the seat rows so if someone reclines, you aren’t stuck gazing into their eyes while they put their head in your lap.

I hate flying. I really do.

The solution is sufficient legroom for most people.

True dat. But like the government, their "solution" will be to further punish the passenger to fix the problem they created in the first place.

I've noticed ticket prices have jumped significantly. You'd think we might get better service in the deal. But no.

My opinion is that anyone who would use a knee defender is a jerk.

The solution is to create a new class of travel with a significant discount. Anesthetize those travelers and stack them like cord wood. That would increase the load factor and the profits to the point adjusting the distances between rows wouldn’t be the big deal in the anything for a buck airline industry.

The answer is in the packaging.

I hate flying too.

On a recent business trip from NJ to Nashville, TN, I drove. It was nice to see the country while driving through the mountains of Virginia. Much better than the indignities of flying today.

I’d go for the bad breath defense. When they recline they get closer. Garlic is your friend. I’d suggest ramps but they probably won’t let you on the plane.

My opinion is that anyone who would recline their seat into my knees is a jerk.

I've noticed JET-A prices have jumped significantly. As an airline passenger, you don't see that. Being involved in general aviation, I see that regularly. The airlines get better long-term deals on fuel than we GA slobs do, but eventually they get bit by it ... and pass it on to you.

Until they get smart enough to do so, a reasonable compromise would be seats that recline no more than about 15 degrees.

15 degrees makes a nap possible but not comfortable. It also makes the person behind them not comfortable, but at least not miserable.

I don’t like flying anymore either. Seems the airlines have gone out of their way to make the experience as miserable as possible. And Homeland Security groping us isn’t helping.

Saw a recent show of Mythbusters where they challenged the myth that it was quicker to drive from S.F. to L.A. than to fly. The guy flying beat the driving team by 7 minutes.

My opinion is that anyone who reclines his seat all the way is a jerk.

I have noticed (when I must fly commercial) that very few passengers on United, AA, or Delta recline their seats at all. It just isn’t really necessary.

I have to agree. Maybe it’s because I’m relatively thin but I’ve never had an issue with the person in front of me reclining. The only issues I’ve had are with passengers too large to fit in their seats spilling over into my seat. To me that makes the flight far more uncomfortable than whether the person in front tilts their seat back or not. I’m usually reading on the flight so I don’t even notice anyway. If I were to try to take a nap only to find out the person behind me has jammed my seat from properly functioning I have to say I’d be rather pissed.

Why don’t the airlines drug everyone into a comatose state and stack them like cord wood?

It aint nothing. It is still a miracle I can get on a jet and fly to Albuquerque in 3 1/2 hours. Here’s my advice to you prickly fliers: 1) Arrive early 2) be nice 3) take a valium if you need to.

There are very few things in this world more uncomfortable than an airline seat in full upright position.

Mythbusters is right. Flying is faster. But for some of us, it's a matter of comfort. Often comfort and less hassle in general is more important than speed.
