Drunk. In college. Drove to the middle of nowhere, somewhere to the northwest of Tallahassee. There was a hill. It was dark. We stepped in cow crap. Found a cow standing on the side of hill. She looked over at us as we approached. Three of us came to within 5 feet or so of her. One, two, three and three beefy drunk students ran/pushed the side of the cow. I swear the cow looked startled as she not only went over, but had enough momentum that she was back up on her hooves in a frighteningly quick manner. Loud, loud moos mixed with much laughter until we turned around and saw the bull...
I have, its real hard to sneak up on them, and its dangerous with range cattle. I think I’ve been successful only once in my lifetime.
P.S. The only reason I think that I had been successful only once is because I can only remember once being able to push the cow over. Alcohol was involved many times and since I became a vet I quit activities like that. I have had the $41T kicked out of me many times before I reached 20.
Funny story. Once I was delivering a calf just like Dr. Pol in that picture and it was at night. The owner had called me and told me where it was and when I got there no one was around so I started right away repositioning the calf. I was laid out moving the calf’s head inside the uterus when I felt a lick on my neck. I didn’t know the owner had buffalo in the pasture also and having grown up near Lawton, Oklahoma, knew the dangers of them. I almost had a heart attack. I pulled the calf and quickly exited the pasture.
