train kills pedestrian on tracks at torrey pines beach
San Diego6 ^ | Sep 7, 2014

A pedestrian was hit and killed Sunday by an Amtrak train at Torrey Pines State Beach, a sheriff's spokesman said.

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were dispatched at 11:34 a.m. Sunday to the area near McGonigle Road and Carmel Valley Road near a Torrey Pines State Beach parking lot, a dispatcher said. An NCTD train dispatcher told SDFRD personnel a pedestrian was hit by the train between the Solana Beach and Sorrento Valley Coaster stations.

Emergency responders determined the pedestrian was killed in the crash, sheriff's spokesman Jim Walker said. The details of the crash were not immediately available.

A series of NCTD tweets said service on the rail was delayed and the agency was sending buses to transport Coaster passengers onboard the train that killed the pedestrian, and other stranded trains.

It is very difficult to get hit and killed on a train track ——unless it is a suicide.

True, especially there. Used to live very near there, no way you would not know the train was coming.

Is this the right place? If so, you can see it approaching from quite a ways.

It is even easier not to get killed by a train: don’t walk on the freaking track!

That is Torrey Pines beach area. Funny thing is, there are no pedestrian crossing anywhere around there. Entrance to beach parking lot goes under the tracks.

Only place there is a road crossing is way up at the north end of Del Mar.

I know of at least two people here in Maine killed while listening to ipod with headphones. One lived next to the train tracks.

Not necessarily. A LOT of Obama voter types will clamp on their headphones, stir down the track and assume they will hear the train or the train will see them.

People used to jog on the trail next to the tracks in that area between Torrey Pines and Del Mar. Haven’t looked at exactly where this occurred yet, but I could imagine someone jogging with music playing through their ear buds, and just being taken by surprise.

Sometimes people are killed elsewhere and their bodies put on the RR tracks to cover the murder.

I was thinking the same thing. I think the train tracks are considered a lateral hazard and you can two take club lengths relief. I’ll have to check the rules book.

Quite a few “informal” crossing spots through Del Mar to get to the beach, and trails along the tracks, so likely as you say, inattention. Texting away?
