I added a Rossi lever-action carbine chambered for .357 and .38 Special a while back just to have a more rounded set of choices. The choice was partly due to it using ammo that I already use/have so I didn't have to add another item to my inventory.
Do you know what modern wells are like? No bucket will fit down those wells. They're barely 4 inches in diameter with a pipe running down several hundred feet. You could lower a cup, I suppose, but you'd need an awful lot of rope.
I encourage you and others to buy and read a great guide called “A Failure of Civility”. Why? It lists and describes a wide range of roles to be filled by individuals and teams who form and execute a neighborhood protection plan. The authors explicitly recognize that not everyone is young, athletic and ninja-skilled.
I am 59 with tired knees. there’s no way I can ‘go kinetic’ the way my sons can. I shouldn’t have to. But I can cook, clean, chop, watch, teach, re-load, weed, mentor, lead, negotiate, etc, etc. Not everyone will be on point for the fire team; if i am, things have gone horribly wrong. I am an auxillary in this regard. It will not be my job to close with the enemy and defeat them with fire and manuver. Others need to do that. I am set to act in a variety of roles that enable others to do their job.
Think team. think system.
A great attribute you can choose to bring to the ‘fight’ is courage.
Ditto. Been doing some studying on flint knapping, however, it seems to be something I'm going to need to find an expert and have them teach me.
I have a pretty good idea where you live and you live in a bug out place. By the way. I have a friend who lives in your area that is a “prepper” of sorts who has a farm (big turkey operation).By the way he is a welder too.

Maybe, but it doesn't take long to learn. Especially gardening.
Thanks!
I hadn’t heard about “A Failure of Civility.” Thanks!
Welding is a no brainer, it’s the equipment that would be the problem for most people.
Any narrow container will do. The amount of twine depends upon the water level. Many people have shallow wells less than 20 feet so not much to worry about there. Put the little kids on water drawing detail.
Here are several online google books on soap and candle making.

Now is the time to start collecting how to books. Online sources need to be printed out so you’ll have hard copies of these as you won’t be able to acces the internet during SHTF times.
I’ve gathered info on substitutions for cooking ingredients and the latest project is minimal 2-3 ingredient recipes. Such as not having eggs but a boxed cake mix can be made with only the addition of a soft drink.
BTW, those who think throwing out some online survival garden seeds is going to feed their family are going to have a rude awakening. Aside from Master Gardener skills, gardens take a lot of water which many won’t have.
Well, then I think I’ll apply my brain power to something else and let my kids and hubby worry about the welding.LOL
You are exactly right about gardening. It takes space, good soil, water, temperate environment (how long is your growing season and/or do you have a greenhouse?); access to sunlight (hard to hide) and time (45 days minimum but may be as long as 120 days for some crops to come in).
I had the pleasure /sarc of serving under a 1stLt that had a degree in animal husbandry. His illiteracy was bourn from his grasp of the Queen’s English.
The only reason a hardass Gunny didn’t drum him outta OCS was......wait fer it.....AFFIRMATIVE ACTION! He was never augmented into the Regular Corps of Officers
Don’t ya live on the Front Range?
Lol, naw, it’s lots of fun. Sort of like that Rice Krispy Treat commercial. Make them think it’s hard so they don’t want to have anything to do with it.
No, on the extreme Eastern edge of Sparks, NV.
Valley o’ the Sun. Guess ya live on the front range of some, and leeward of some. I was once a valley dweller....29 Palms, CA;-)
I’ll be on Fremont Street sometime next year ...I’ll give ya a heads up!
YMMV. It doesn’t sound like fun to me. I couldn’t even stand to solder wires in my basic electricity class. In fact that class was such non-fun, I dropped it.
