A single mother, people who have been married before and couples who have been living together "in sin" were married by Pope Francis in a taboo-challenging ceremony at the Vatican on Sunday.

In another signal of the openness of his papacy, Francis asked to marry 40 people from different social backgrounds who would be a realistic sample of modern couples.

Marriage "is not an easy road, it's sometimes a contentious trip, but that's life", the pope told the couples, both young and old, as their families gathered for the solemn two-hour ceremony.

Like I take deep theological info from business insider. They repent and marry. That’s always been the case.

Do any of them have previous un-anulled mariages?

That's the taboo.

This is just the beginning. Next he’ll be marrying homosexuals, lesbians, transexuals, pedophiles, polygamists, et al. He can do it all!

Yes, they did the right thing. I applaud this. Repentance followed by an expeditious marriage.

I do wonder though. My niece and her “live-in” took over a year to plan a huge Catholic wedding pageant. Their 3 year old daughter was a flower girl. Somehow, I don't think that fits in with the spirit of repentance.

That was not unusual...

Even back in what people think of as the good old days, the child often preceded the wedding!

Such marriages as related in the article could be viewed as a form of repentance.

The Pope did the right thing—Marriage is the answer to many of the problems in the modern world.

The process of annulment is more then just saying you’re sorry. There are forms to fill out and witnesses who testify by answering a series of questions. A priest must review the situation and sign off acknowledging that the marriage should not have happened in the first place. If there was no abuse or infidelity, both parties must want the annulment. Thems the rules.

Let me correct you slightly. The determination must be that a valid marriage never occurred at all. Abuse and infidelity do not play into the decision at all.
