Crash Report: Apple's iOS 8 Is Crashing Apps 65 Percent More Than iOS 7
NBC News ^ | 09/24/2014

Apple's new iOS 8 is causing apps to crash 65 percent more frequently than iOS 7, according to a report updated Wednesday by mobile analytics company Crittercism.

But there's a big catch here: Crittercism is comparing current rates for the week-old iOS 8 to the year-old iOS 7. New operating systems frequently launch with initial bugs and other issues -- particularly for the earliest adopters -- and Apple typically pushes system updates through quickly.

Overall, iOS 8 is causing apps to crash 3.29 percent of the time as of midnight Tuesday, Crittercism said. That's compared with the current 2 percent crash rate for iOS 7. Crittercism has been tracking crash rates since September 17, the day Apple released iOS 8, and rates peaked on September 21 at 3.56 percent. Unsurprisingly, older devices including the iPhone 4S, 5 and 5S experienced higher crash rates. Apple did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Here's the trick for a stable upgrade: remove as many unused apps as possible before attempting the upgrade. In fact, on my iPad Air, the upgrade from iOS 7.1.2 to 8.0 worked okay except for the L-O-N-G time it took to download the installation files for the upgrade.

And the iOS update 8.0.1 is causing the phone to lose all cell connectivity:

Ouch!

I can confirm this, as I just updated to 8.01.

No Cell Phone Service.

Ouch! Sorry to hear of your troubles. I’m waiting to update to iOS 8 for a month or two...

Getting ready to upgrade my Mac to 10.9, I feel it’s stable enough to run my Windows 7 via Parallels in.

Likely a winter project...

I’m a LONG way from updating to 10.10, maybe 2016...

Good luck!

The ios itself doesn’t take a lot of memory. It uses memory to download it though. If you hardwire it to download ios8 there is no problem. If you try to do it wireless is where you run into the memory problem. Plug it in to a computer.

Before I update, I would make sure the printers you have will support
the new mac software.

I had to call Apple support via Skype to report lost carrier signal
on iPhone 6 update 8.01

I wish I had read your post before I updated.

Thanks for the printer heads-up, I mostly print via Windows.

Four printers here in the house, three of ‘em AirPrint. Something should work...

Are you having printer issues on Mavericks?

I don’t use Mavericks for that reason.
My printers will only support mountain Lion.
So, I have not moved up.

Upgraded to ios8 on my 4s. No loss of cellular service but it is noticeably slower on apps.

Lesseehere ... massive wave of changes hitting in mere days, vs a year for the onset of tranquility. ... and people point & taunt because the crash rate temporarily went up 1.3 percentage points.

A lot of the negativity is due to a paid campaign by Samsung, apparently, is what I've been hearing. Apple just announced that they're giving employees the entire week of Thanksgiving off to thank them for their hard work on all this. Countdown to siccing the ACLU on them. AIIEEE!! Religious, religious, do not want!!! It's gotten that silly. The FUD is amped up to 90's Microsoft level and beyond.

Hater? I’m sick of you Commodore people and your “SID is superior to POKEY” audio commentary and all of that similar nonsense you people spew. How about that uber-slow load time of your disk drives? Huh? Need an Epyx Fast Loader cart do you???

:-P :-) .... just think, if the internet (as we know it today) was around back then, I’m sure those kinds of posts would be everywhere :-).

I am a recently minted Fanboi and I upgraded my 5c to iOS 8. I’m seeing one really annoying new trait with iOS 8 that I didn’t have with 7.1.2: When using my iPhone to respond to threads in Free Republic, holding the phone in landscape mode, the keyboard is now so frikkin’ big that there’s only a tiny sliver of the window you’re typing in, and not enough window to see what you’re typing. With 7.1.2 this was not an issue.
