The California-based tech giant has joined forces with Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung and other tech firms to develop the planes in an initiative called Internet.org.
Today, around 2.7 billion people have access to the internet, which is just one third of the global population.
The members of the initiative said in a report that connecting the world is 'one of the fundamental challenges of our time' and they plan to do it using a variety of technologies, including drones.
'When people have access to the internet, they can not only connect with their friends, family and communities, but they can also gain access to the tools and information to help find jobs, start businesses, access healthcare, education and financial services and have a greater say in their societies.

One of those drones comes down and takes out a school and surrounding neighborhood and it will be the end of Facebook.
So much of the internet is based on literacy. First you have to teach people to read.
Hru? Ntk u r here.
Yea.. IT company developing aircraft.. that will work out well.. so aircraft rule number one for IT guys..

LOL they ain’t feathers.
If you think "pick any favorite target of libs" is hated, be the greedy owner of the company whose drone takes out a school, a hospital, a neighborhood or two, some apartment buildings full of infants and the elderly, etc. in the first "horrific crash of an internet providing drone".
Be that guy and you'll know what hated feels like even better than Sarah Palin and the Koch brothers.
Like...NOT!
This will be good news for the millions of Farmville addicts the world over.
I like how Brit press USES CAPS in their headlines
This idea has been around for several years. I think one version was called a Stratellite and involved high-altitude stratospheric airships. It failed primarily due to bad management and lack of stable funding. With a company such as Facebook involved, funding and management in not a major concern. When you get outside of major population areas, there is a large market for such technology. There are presently two major satellite companies doing quite well providing an inferior product to this otherwise undeserved market.
I’m sure those living in hovels and cooking over scat fueled fires are WORRIED about their internet access.
Another 1st world solution looking for a problem
